It was 1.6 petrol engine went which he knew was coming so when it happened he put in a 197 Clio engine which he tuned up a bit before hand. So now he just cruises around and gets the usual young lads in there red DI badge diesel etc passing him and laughing and all that. So then he drops a gear and walks past them and the faces he loves it. It is seriously quick car though them Clio engine are well able to go.

I'm lead to believe on a Diesel it's good to switch the key in the ignition to light up the display, etc. before actually turning the car over (apparently you should wait about 10 seconds before you turn the car over?). Anyway, I didn't know this (and I'm still not sure if it's a myth or not) so was regularly met with the car turning over and instantly dying.

It only ever seems to happen in the mornings (after it's been lying up for the night). In the Rav, I used to get in, turn the key to start the ignition, it'd turn over, and away with me. Anyway, I didn't know this (and I'm still not sure if it's a myth or not) so was regularly met with the car turning over and instantly dying. For example, I get in, turn the car over, and it dies. Do it a second time, and it dies. Do it a third time and it starts up without a bother, and doesn't give another ounce of trouble. Leaving the dash illuminated for about 10 secs has helped a tad, but that could all just be in my head either. Thing is, it's only in the mornings. Even after a short spin it won't happen. This morning I went out to the car, (left the dash on for about 5 secs) and it died once and started on the second go. I drove for about 30 minutes, then left the car lying up for 10 hours. When I went out to it after the 10 hours, it started without a moments hesitation (left the dash on for about 5 secs again though). I'm bewildered by it, to be completely honest. Maybe it's just not a 'morning' car? :P

The glow plugs had to warm up before the car would perform, and it would do just what you are talking about if they were not given the bit of time to warm up, and like you say, if the car had been driven they were fine, it was starting from cold that was a bugger. Now that was (sadly I'm old) 17 years ago (JESUS), and I'm not sure how far along diesel tech has come along since then in the likes of your 407 especially as you don't note the year. The one saving grace in the two diesels I drove up to 2001 was that the glow plugs had an indicator on the dash that told you it was ok to go. I wonder if you need them replaced if they still exist now? I imagine they are the same as spark plugs on a petrol (others correct me if I am wrong) and if they degrade in that case you'll get nowhere. What mileage are you at?
