No not all farmers (especially not my brother and two uncles!) but this particular man is downright careless! He did same again few weeks later and only we knew the symptoms of poisoning we'd have lost our dog

I have 2 westies and they always eat €1/kg dog food they do very well on it one is four and the other is ten. The four year old is an indoor dog snow white coat. Just because certain dog food is a crazy price doesn't mean it's better.

I've never had a proper pet bar a few goldfish and a gerbil that lasted two weeks so although I respect people's love for their pets, I don't really completely get it. I think you have to have had one to understand.

Is it dry stuff u giving theme? My dogs coat went rotten from €1 per kg dry food. I pay an extra tenner a month or 60c extra per kg for decent stuff but took a lot of research to try find a decent value one.

Their coats are perfect but then again my daughter is a dog groomer. Do you brush out their coats often? If not they will get matted the same if you wash them too often.

What's the decent value one? He'd eat anything but weight is an issue. The "light" food just comes in a smaller bag for more money as far as I can see!

a lot of farmers label dog owners the exact same thing...if you've ever seen the aftermath of a dog attack on sheep you'll understand why.

that aside, i paid 3k this summer for a horse that needed colic surgery. she survived and is doing great thanks to the fab team of vets at ucd.

Skinners gets good reviews, both online and in the animals and pets forum. Personally i get the duck or chicken and rice food."field and trial".its branded as being for working dogs.My dogs coat has improved immensely after feeding him it..and they gobble it up!

What exactly was wrong with his coat if it was food related it would be only dull. Do you brush your dogs coat?

Was very dull.. Looked rotten. He isn't long haired hairy but gets groomed a few times a year.

I do try and take care of my pets but vet fees don't make it easy. I weigh past experiences and not just price, like the time my first dog was put down at the side of the road still plays on my mind. The vet was all matter of fact and was more into dealing with bigger animals but he was the local vet. The dog did have a cancerous growth but I don't know if anything for could have been done for him or not. Then there an incident with a cat many years later. The cat had taken a bad turn for no apparent reason. Took her to a different vet. He held her in his surgery for many days. We had to come in and feed her as she seemed to be starving and there didn't seem to be improvement. In the end we got no diagnosis just a huge bill and a still very ill cat. We took her home and eventually with a lot of care she improved but she forever lost sight in her left eye and was eventually able to stand and walk in a straight line without help. A few years after this she disappeared, but we didn't panic as cats of ours travelled around to neighbours and usually came back, though some did take up residence elsewhere.
Around the same time I remember hearing a vet on the radio describing the exact symptoms my cat had and when he said that it was the sign of a stroke, I felt my heart sink as I seriously began to fear for my cat and sure enough she never returned. If I had known my cat had had a stroke there's no way I would left her out of my sight.

So long story short I weigh up a trip to the vet very carefully as I've paid a lot for very little.

Years ago I had a white cat who was a legend.

He used to bang the back door with his paw to come inside, he also use to play boxing with me. He was mint.

Anyways, he grew a massive growth on his heart, lost the power to his back legs.

I had no insurance on him. I borrowed a couple of grand from the bank to cover medical costs for him. Unfortunately, it didnt work and i had to let him go.

That was 16 years ago. I still miss my buddy. My pets are my kids and im not afraid to say it

Noticed my hamster was quieter than usual earlier tonight, checked him in his bed in the cage and the little guy was after dying. All curled up in a ball, looked so at peace. Been in bits since. People might be like "but its only a hamster", he was my little buddy. Not gonna be the same not hearing him digging around, drinking ridiculously loudly or running on his wheel, I'll miss the little man.

Thought we'd have to do the unthinkable to our dog a few months back. Big lump on the side of her where she had tumours removed previously. We paid a lot in vet bills over the years and add in the fact she was getting old for a retriever we thought she might suffer less if....

It sounds like a horrible thing to say but I've had relations die before and the sickness I felt waiting on the results of the vet were 10x worse. Thankfully it was good news and the dog has been spoiled rotten since. Seems an awful lot happier too.

Had to put the last dog down - but it nearly killed me to do it.... (the parents never told me she had cancer until 2 years later) brought her to the vet he gave her the adrenalin shots and sat up night after night with her... had her from 6 months for 12 years.... Still makes me well up thinking about the day we brought her down.... 3 years ago...

The cat had the same fate not long after. But I was aware it was cancer and there was nothing to be done for him so it was a much easier decision..

In the short - if something could be done I'd do it but, if it's only going to increase pain and suffering or nothing can be done its better to do whats right for the animal, even though thats most often the hardest thing..

I've spent the guts of 800 quid on my shepherd so far this year for what is essentially a yeast infection. Skin issues are common in white sheps. Shes five years old now and until this hadn't cost me a penny outside of standard vaccines and neutering. I don't give a **** what anyone thinks, not having to watch her struggle with the pain and discomfort anymore was worth every penny. She's flaked on the sofa now not a care in the world. Something which was wishful thinking a few months ago.

As for Noel, the supervet...he's amazing.

I like animals more than most humans. Loyal, loving & trustworthy...ok well maybe not cats, but cats have tons of personality. That counts for a lot.

My dogs, two little boys, are my whole entire world. I would spend my last cent on them if it came down to it, no question. They are like my children. 2 years ago my oldest dog broke his leg. That dog slept in my bed with me with his little cast, because he was so disorientated from all his sedation, and I didn't want him to be scared.

Last winter, I had a stray dog, 6 puppies, and a big dog. I had left my job to take care of my dad, who was ill. I had feck all money, but the dogs were cared for. She was getting liver, cottage cheese, salmon ect trying to boost her milk supply. The puppies were being fed on puppy formula, and the adult dogs were getting their nuts and their wet food.
Meanwhile, I had about 12 euro left for my own food. Noodles, pasta, and fruit mostly. The puppies grew up to be big happy and healthy, the adults were happy and healthy, and they were absolutely worth every bit of the pressure I felt.

I can't even imagine loving anyone or anything as much as I love my dogs.
