Incidentally, on the "but we already pay for water " line used in response to all the other countries with water charges, did they all go from no water straight to pipes being run to their houses and being charged for it or did they move from it being paid for by taxes to charges, just like us?

Sorting water will take a lot longer than the term of a government, or local authority, so water schemes don't figure in political thinking, anything further out than the next election is irrelevant to our political classes and their leaders

IW however is completely wrong, for all the reasons outlined already, the people are wrong, the structure is wrong, the bonus and perks culture is wrong, the "entitled" culture is wrong, and the track record of many of the people in the local authorities is less than stellar.

The charging for water needs to be more related to consumption by all users, and it doesn't necessarily bear any relation to the size of the property, there are examples locally of relatively small houses that are being occupied by way above "normal" numbers of people, so having a meter based charging system does at least mean that the charge made reflects the usage, which is the fairest way to generate the revenue needed.

If water charges were so wrong, they would not be used in just about every country in Europe and the rest of the developed world. I don't see huge numbers of people protesting about water charges in the EU, with the right safeguards in place to protect the consumer, an independent water system is the best way to resolve the mess that's been getting worse since FF bribed the electorate in 1977 when the old system of household charges was done away with.

Sure the more that's paid for by income tax the better, then when another 400,000 lose their jobs and stop paying in and need money out instead we can maximise the bang of the next crash.....

These water charges will cause another crash or downturn in the economy after 2016 if they are allowed by the public.
It will have an effect on both shops on the high street and online.
More people will then lose their jobs unless they are working for scam quangos.
Services will be also effected such as TV, Broadband, supermarkets etc.

This is Ireland. I don't care what they do in other countries. If/when I decide to live in one, I'll care then.

Nice theory, but in practice, state services have to be paid for. We might not be getting good value for money from some of those services, and changing that situation is not going to be easy, or quick, at least people are starting to talk about it now, rather than just hoping that things might change.

Back to talking about IW, as that's the real issue right now. 2 of the 3 major parties accept the principle of charging for water, and it's been signed off by the IMF/Troika, so getting out of that decision at this stage is not going to be easy.

IW is completely the wrong structure to bring it in. We need a more suitable and accountable organisation, preferably with no semi state "managers" at the top, who will put the needed structure in place, and make the massive changes that are needed to secure the future of the water network.

Whatever it ends up being called, IW is a poisoned chalice for the foreseeable future, and the longer the Government tries to pretend that there's no problems, the worse the issue will become.

Not really, the vast majority of people have woken up and will take no more sh*t from Enda and Co.

Getting people to say they don't want to be charged for something is hardly a huge victory. The majority of the general public will just see water charges = bad and will never look beyond "I will have to pay for this" as a reason for or against anything. Getting them to realise why it's needed is a much much bigger task and an uphill struggle from the outset. Most don't care about the big picture.
