It seems there is a big scandal happening at the moment regarding a woman who was to give a talk at a university about the negative portrayal of women in games. She received terrorist threats if she she went ahead.

This is just nuts. She cancelled the lecture because there would be inadequate security after a psycho emailed her this:

“I have at my disposal a semi-automatic rifle, multiple pistols, and a collection of pipe bombs,” the email said. “She is going to die screaming like the craven little whore that she is if you let her come to USU….I will write my manifesto in her spilled blood, and you will all bear witness to what feminist lies and poison have done to the men of America.”

Somehow feminists are allegedly ruining these angry young men's lives by speaking up about violence and sexualised violence of women, so they respond...with more violence. Ok.

There's a subset of society that completely lose the plot when they try to communicate over the internet. If the law doesn't deal with them as it does for similar forms of abuse seen with footballers, actors, the McCanns, then hopefully social ostracisation gets them for being dangerously stupid arseholes.

That's not really anything to do with Gamer Gate although it suits some people to conflate the two.

Some are professional offense-takers who need there to be a narrative of 'xyz' being oppressed.
Some are the people that the campaign is mostly about - the gaming media.
While there's a fair bit of hyperbole involved and some gamers taking leaps of logic, the standard of games journalism is atrocious.

Partly that's down to the aforementioned offense-takers sticking their oar in, partly it's down to a relationship between media and industry being too cosy.

Initially this was kicked off, to make a long story short, by some gamers questioning the cosy attitude and then the response to them focused on the loonies and tarred most gamers with the same brush.

Predictably the dregs of the internet have been drawn to the whole thing, like vultures to carrion.

I'm sure the huge, vast, enormous majority of gamers hate this stuff and its the vocal few bringing the whole community into disrepute, but I really feel so bad for those women to have to live with that kind of hate directed at them. It's beyond hideous.

Every community has a dark underbelly to some extent.

This has nothing to do with Gamergate, firstly. Secondly, Sarkeesian has been called out on falsifying threats made against her at least twice before, so I wouldn't be surprised at all if this was made up, too. She's a liar, manipulator and thief, as well as being one of two feminists responsible for destroying two charities aimed at helping young girls and women.

Gamergate has nothing to do with threats or harassment. Its a consumer movement against corrupt games journalism. Anita is getting attention because she is marketable and fits their agenda.

'Games journalism' is a joke, and a lot of the so called 'games journalists' are just awful. Shame the whole thing is being overshadowed by the minority who seem determined to pursue it as an anti feminist matter, and on the other side, those who are seemingly determined to make it an feminist issue.

Maybe it's just me - but this whole thing seems incredibly pathetic to me.

With all the real problems in the world, I can't see any reason to care about the perceived sexual inequalities in fictional media. And I really can't see any reason to care about what some group of people are saying about those perceived sexual inequalities in fictional media.

At the end of the day - ANYONE is free to produce any type of video game they want. If the market doesn't have the types of games you want, create them. Supply and Demand will dictate what types of games are the dominate games. If you look at all of the romance novels published in 2014, you'd probably find all sorts of trends in which the lead male role is an attractive man....because the primary purchasers of romance novels want attractive man in their story.
