got the following quotes for base price on Mon 23 Jan

4.10e/kg aibp bandon
4.15e/kg aibp cahir

quotes including bord bia
am holding tough as hoping for 4.25e/kg

At a base of 3.65 R+ bullocks would make 3.83/kh a difference of 33c/kg. These type of cattle are grand but you have to pick your selling time. Same with bulls no point in having them when cattle are plentiful. A few week ago those cattle would be working off a base of 10c less with a penelty for over 400kgs.

Heard factorys praying for weather to break, and trying to justify cow price by saying its close to steer price, but steer price is too low and cow price getting to right levels, they are struggling to get cows (cheap beef) and steer base will have to rise if they cant get the cows to fill in volumes...don't let stock go easily..

Cheers Pudsey, it was an elderly neighbour I tried t get him to hold off. He has a few more overage ones to go. Will try and get him to hold till December if he can.

Charlaville. We send to 2 different factories, so we'd be bouncing one off the other. they could be 5 cent lower than the other factory next week, i'd nearly say they (factories or agents) are in contact with each other deciding who's turn it is.

Bandon won't pay for them, so the cattle will go up the road further this morning for an extra 18 euro a head. graded very poor in bandon any time we sent them there

Quoted - 3.65 base for steers this week in Liffey Meats. Apparently if you are in the North West you can get 3.70 from them!

There will always be a few lads that will factory no matter what, Always finished cattle and are too proud to sell in the ring, know one man nearby and would have blks 3/3.5 yrs old mix of ch and a few fr, would have some blks touching a ton, pure tanks of lads, I'd put money on it he would never sell in the ring, he'd rather get cut for overage and maybe weight too, I'd rather sell in the ring and maybe have €70/€80 more per head, f@&k what anyone says, too many lads worrying what other lads thinking

Overage stock it's a no brainer to sell through the ring and sell tough. Cattle with good cover will always be wanting.

Don't entirely agree. It's only a very few good quality cattle I see that I would actually consider make more in the ring than hanging up. Not many buyers for those types that don't know their value when they come in. In addition, don't forget the deductions for commission, VAT etc. per head when selling through the mart.

Deductions are case equal.

The lads around the ring are getting a better deal than you or l, don't kid yourself they're not doing it for nothing. They'll make up a load and send them to different factories knowing where they will get on the best.

I am saying all this from my own experience. Some might be cosy with their factory agent. I am not.

I do agree with you regarding having good stock. They will always sell themselves. Trick is not to let them go too easily. Got €200 more for an animal outside the sellers box by holding tough and knowing their value.

depends on selection of buyers ringside, ive got scorched a few times and watch them more carefully now, they do gang up from time to time,with puffing or blocking depends on mood. if a row starts and agent is seated up midway is buying well its great place, but you must be prepared to walk.

A lot of sh#te hawking can go on at the Mart. Ill have this one and yon have the next. Commission on a dear animal can be up to 35 Euro at the Mart. It 15 max at the factory. Also the lad buying at the ring will want to make his few quid. Ive seen cattle sold in the Mart recently and they would have made 50 Euro more in the factory. Everyone for themselves I say but I would prefer the factory

What you want to do sometime is put one through the ring and see what highest bid you can get but don't sell.

Book into factory and then sit back and compare. Hopefully you won't be cursing yourself

Don't go trying it the other way around though. ... it won't work

Factory agent will be paid by factory. So don't worry about him or the 35euro. It ain't coming out of your pocket. The lad down from the north don't give a fiddlers about the local small fry either

Wonder is mart better when a rise is in the offing and factories don't want to give it? They can get the mart buyers to fill the gap.

i find the indo straighter than the fj most of the time but i don't pass much remarks on the mart v factory section as the lad that writes it us involved in athenry mart so would bias towards mart sale naturally Imo.

i find when ya go looking for the factory price quoted in fj, ya can often be disappointed.

Sorry Rob, but have to disagree with you there, Factories between vet fees, Bord Bia levy, insurance, their deductions have always been a min of 26 euros on my dockets, and I have taken cattle to the ring last week instead of giving to factories and as reported in yesterdays farming indo, northern buyers desperate to buy (nomad cattle situation seems to be irrelevant to them as they run out of cattle) and that's before the clipping charges they invent this time of year, so mart commission is comparable to factories imo
