Dana White makes his case on why Conor McGregor is likely the number 1 contender to the featherweight title. Conor McGregor recently pulled a 'Chael Sonnen' by announcing a fight that hasn't been booked yet. The UFC quickly shot down the idea of facing Diego Sanchez at lightweight, but it looks like they may have something bigger planned for the Irishman. Dana White spoke to UFC.com and made his case on why McGregor is likely the Number 1 contender at featehrweight: "Here’s the thing: If you go down the list, every one of those guys has fought Jose Aldo already. Conor hasn’t. So who do you line up next for the champ other than Conor? Everybody else has fought him." McGregor is ranked #5 at featherweight after knocking out Poirier. The rest of the field includes Aldo's previous opponents in Chad Mendes, who is already booked for a rematch at UFC 179, Cub Swanson and Frankie Edgar, who are set to face off next month, and Ricardo Lamas. The Swanson fight was actually 5 years ago, but the argument does hold up in general granted that Aldo keeps his belt. If Mendes wins the title though, the field is suddenly wide open and Swanson vs. Edgar arguably is the more deserving challenger from a sporting perspective. That being said, this is also a business, and I do believe that striking while the iron is hot and having McGregor challenge for the title would be the best move for them from an entertainment stand point....

Be like Nutella wrote: » This is not the same as Chael etc Conor is, as of now, widely considered to be good enough to fight for the title, he just hasn't actually fought enough top 5 guys to be technically in line, if that's how you feel it should be done... and not everyone agrees that's how it should be done every time. I think if a guy rips through 2,3,4 guys and shows real class and a finishing ability like Conor and runs through a top 5 guy for fun and shows something different something special even if they haven't fought the other top 4 or whatever then I say they deserve a shot especially when Aldo has fought so many of the other lads. If you asked the top 10 most respected MMA pundits/Journalists I reckon they would see McGregor as a genuine threat to Aldo if they fought soon.. that'a all it takes for me. He's got something different than anyone else in the queue and everybody knows it and it makes him, Aldo and the UFC buckets of cash. It's not fair from one perspective, totally is from another. I don't feel challengers are and should be chosen academically every time. In my mind Conor destroys Cub and Mendes with no more difficulty than Poirier. Edgar is a fascinating match up with his bouncing leprechaun movement but Conor hits way harder than Frankie and is much bigger and I'd say way stronger and finishes Frankie unless Frankie runs away for the whole fight. I even think Conor has his way with Aldo, as in makes Aldo look like 'the rest' ...major blasphemy I know but that's how I see it. They parry he takes a few he tags Aldo a couple times and then finds one shot and finishes him belt please Dream Step 2 completed.
CurryFlavoured wrote: » Yep you're dead right, Cub's more deserving on performance but for excitement and ticket sales McGregor is more logical.@Nutella Calm down there, Aldo afraid? He's basically whiped out the division and he's undeniably P4P top 3. The guy is incredible, cool as a cucumber as well. I love the optimism but talking about Conor KOing him like it's a formality...well, I just don't know.
CurryFlavoured wrote: » Cub deserves the shot more but I'm starting to think he'll never get one because I can see Frankie beating him. He had a shot before but it was over 5 years ago so that argument doesn't hold much weight. Feel bad for Cub as he's a good guy but it's looking exciting for Conor. Bermudez is also more deserving if he can beat Lamas but that's a big if. If they want to make the McGregor/Aldo fight happen soon enough then it should happen. The champs aren't fighting near enough in the UFC and FW has piles of people waiting in line. If they want the fight around Feb I don't see why it shouldn't happen, over 3 months after Aldo/Mendes. This is all assuming Aldo wins and Conor gets the shot.
