"Leap" into the unknown: The feedback thread

I am just about to bring my new Leap card into the strange world of public transport to test it. There are already several Leap threads going and we've already had some points about its usage raised in them. Maybe we can keep this thread for more specific feedback by the people who have actually got a card and leave the more general discussions on it to the other threads. So if you have some specific feedback from actually using the card put it in here, as briefly as possible. Then we can all use it when we are feeding back our experiences in the questionnaires we are all supposed to be getting. If anything arises here that people would like to discuss in more detail, switch to one of the other threads which already have a broad range of discussion about it that is likely to be relevant. Anyway, my Leap card and I are about to head out. Wish us luck!:D

I checked my balance earlier and my card needed to be topped up. However it appears from the online top-up facility that the credit isn't added to my account immediately and there's a wait of several hours before it is. It also appeared that I'd have to go to a ticket agent to have the credit actually applied to the card. Is this correct or am I missing something obvious?

There is no "Leap monthly ticket", there is a Dublin Bus monthly ticket that can be loaded on a Leap Card. Subtle, but material difference. The Dublin Bus ticket includes Airlink.

If you had loaded a Dublin Bus rambler ticket onto our card it would include the travel on the Airlink 747.

The 747 is a premium route that is operated on a commercial basis and doesn't attract a public service subsidy. note that Aircoach and most other independents don't accept Leap Card at all and you would have to pay full fare there.

That said, it would be useful if there was a discount to half the return fare.

I thought using the Leap card means that I pay less than if paying cash for journeys on bus, tram, and train. Seems to work on the tram and bus (don't use the Dart often enough to know if there's a difference) but when I used it on the 747 to Dublin Airport I was deducted €6. Was a bit annoyed as I would have bought a return for €10 instead, if I'd known.

Anyone know why this is? Is it just the 747 where the Leap card pays the full price, or other routes too?

If it beeps twice then he/she might need to check and see that it's not an adult using a childrens card or something similar.

If it beeps once then it doesn't matter who used it, he/she doesn't have to look at the user, they've paid as much as they need to.

Hi,

I have a student leap card and my girlfriend has the regular one.

We took a bus and she pressed her card against the scanner and it beeped once but when I did it, it beeped twice. Any idea why?

The idea is to get people to use cashiers and ticket machines less. If people could top-up by less than €5, they would essentially be doing the same thing as paying cash for tickets, but travelling at Leap Card prices.

If you want a Leap Card price, you have to follow their rules.

I put over 4 euro in coins into a Luas ticket machine the other day and then realised the minimum Leap top-up is €5 :mad: why is that? There's no reason for a minimum top up at a ticket machine.

If someone has a negative balance on their card, and has enough coins to make it a positive balance then there's no reason not to let them top up and travel. As it stands unless they can make the minimum €5 top up or the cash fare then they can't travel, even though Leap are holding most of the €5 deposit they paid when they got their card...

If Dublin Bus ticket machines weren't so archaic, much of the retail/on-street stuff wouldn't be needed because online top-ups and ticket sales would be far more viable.

The NFC mobile app that NTA are looking to develop will also help but unfortunately that looks to be about two years off.

Don't know why they don't just stick a few dedicated leap TVM's near busy bus stop areas like College Green and O'Connell Street etc.Surely wouldn't be too expensive and would be a good on street marketing presence for Leap too.Much handier than having to go to a shop or LUAS stop to top up.

Then surely it is open to the Payzone agent to surrender the Leapcard element ?

If enough Agents do this then some form of action will have to be taken to address the problem,IF it is that.

The NTA PR puffery speaks of 600,000 Leapcards issued,with enough additional usage generated by the new system coupled with,hopefully enhanced,Public Transport services,this rising tide should float all boats ?

Card Status/Balance Checks really should not require a visit to a Payzone Agent when the infrastructure already exists to bring it to the actual Bus Stop itself.

Yes as the same everyone thinks bus drivers are tourist info hot spots.

Even a lot of cashiers don't understand the leap system.

It will take around 10 years for people to catch on.

This is the commission on leap card top ups....add in credit card charges....cost of machine rental from payzone....staff costs....it's really just a nuisance and customers don't always buy something else. Don't get me started on tourist customers...not their fault but surely there must be a better system for tourists?

I had a chat with a Leap Card agent.

They get about 4% gross for a top-up, i.e. they get 80 cents for s €20 top-up. However they get nothing for balance enquiries, which are required for ticket collection.

Once you get the appropriate Leap Product that combination should not present any difficulties.

Two in Ballsbridge,A Centra and a Spar,both with long opening hours.

It's worth bearring in mind that the Monthly Rambler/Zonal ticket will be available for collection from the last week of the preceeding month,with all thats required being a "Balance Enquiry" at the Payzone Terminal.

I would suggest that the NTA really do need to get their shytt together on this issue asap.

A network of Hardwired Top-Up Readers throughout the City (Think RTPI Pole

) would significantly increase the ease-of-use factor to Leapcard and Taxsaver.

I am starting a new job in Ballsbridge next month and I am thinking of commuting for the first few months from Navan. I would like to use the tax saver leap card. Would I be able to use this as I will need to take two buses, one to Dublin and one to Ballsbridge. Will the card work on both? Is it complicated to set up and use?

Also I was reading on the website about the card.

Hi all.

I manage 5 leap cards from my account however my 18 year old currently using an adult LEAP is going to a child leap until she is 19. I have auto top up enabled on all the cards. Does anyone know if I unregister her current LEAP (and put it away safely) will the auto top up stay active if we re-register it and use it again in the future.

I am assuming you can still only register a maximum of 5 cards per account so this is why I need to unregister her current one.

Yes,as long as you have sufficient funds in your purse,then you can pay for the entire Bus Load if you wish !

If you have childern who can travel alone then get to www.childleapcard.ie ASAP,remeber if they have their own ChildLeapcard,then they travel FREE on Dublin Bus from 11th to 24th August

No compulsion mine you,if they want to they can stick with Cash,and pay away....
