Bought a dodgy car...

I really need advise..

In May this year, we bought a 00 1.4 Golf. We new when buying that it needed a few small jobs done (no NCT, water pump + timing belt done recently plus serviced - according to the ad), but after initial inspection and bargaining, we got the car for €650 (asking price €800). It drove perfect for 2 weeks, then the valves in the engine went. We replaced the engine (cheapest option) and the car was still not right. The mechanic said all the bulbs from the dash were removed. You know the lights that appear on the dash if the oil is low etc. The seller removed these so on initial inspection, they wouldn't come on.

We then sent the car to our local garage. He told us the amount of issues with the car was not worth the amount of money we would have to spend. He gave us a list of about 20 different codes, which the car shouldn't have. For example, the spark plugs were all different, apparently they are supposed to be the same?

Anyway, my question is.... What come back do i have here? The seller was a complete cowboy. We are out of pocket by €1150 and still no car..

For future reference buy a car thats in date for its NCT.

I know theres a lot of cars out there that dont have an NCT but they should, its a legal requirement.

In fairness the NCT doesn't really give you an indication that you might have bought a complete lemon.

there´s a difference between a car that´s at the end of its NCT and one that hasnt had an NCT cert for say several months

In general, if you are buying a car for private use from a dealer, you are fully protected by consumer laws, which also give you the right to take legal action if your rights are not upheld.
But the same consumer rights do not exist when you are buying a car privately, as the seller is not acting in the course of a business. So you need to be more careful and well informed before buying a car in this way.

Similarly, if you are buying a car/jeep/van for your trade, business or profession, you may not be covered by consumer law.

Sellers' responsibilities
It is an offence under both road traffic legislation and the Sale of Goods and Supply of Services Act to sell a car to a consumer which is not roadworthy.

If the car is not raod worthy you could argue he should not of sold it, with the warning bulbs being removed he cant really claim he was no9t aware of the issues

You might as well say there's a difference between a car and another car for all the sense that makes....
