I think the first video, at the end, they were going at speed and the lights only just changed.. I wouldn't have stopped - for that particular junction.

I think rather than using court time and everything else involved in prosecuting somebody who could be any of our own mothers and is probably feeling enough guilt already, it would be far more beneficial and save a lot more lives if they used that time to introduce re-testing of drivers every 5 years or so once they hit a certain age.

Do you believe that a test would prevent a driver going the wrong way on a motorway ?
Are motorways even involved in driver testing?

You also make an assumption that an older person is a higher risk which could be mitigated by retesting. A stupid assumption in my opinion.
I would be interested in seeing a statistical analysis of age profiles of motor accidents. We are far too quick to jump to conclusions without facts.

A proper test could determine whether a driver is still of the right frame of mind to be driving and of course motorways should be introduced. I certainly believe regular testing of ageing drivers could prevent a driver going the wrong way down a dual carriageway/motorway. There's been at least 4 videos posted in this thread of drivers going the wrong way. If you take the % of drivers with dash cams, the % of drivers with dash cams who use boards.ie and the % who use boards and post here, that's a shocking amount and it must be happening much more often which is scary.

I don't think it's a stupid assumption at all and I'm sure it's somewhat related to most open drive policies limiting a drivers age to 70 and I guess they are the ones with access to a lot of statistics of claims, claims including low speeds tips, scrapes etc.

I've seen plenty of examples of old drivers I believe shouldn't be on the road and while they may be sweet and innocent, they are a definite higher risk to other road users.

Doctors are often reluctant to tell a long standing patient they can no longer drive. I had a close relative who was a danger on the road but the doctor signed him off anyway. The family had to goto the doctor to tell him to retract the signoff. The poor man had lost his coordination completely, used to drive at max 20mph and could not drive in a straight line.

Yeah? and I've seen plenty of examples of young drivers I believe shouldn't be on the road. Many of these can't be more than a couple of years out from their test. Statistics aren't on their side either.

I hear this bleat about retesting older drivers rolled out after every incident. It's not the answer. I remember the driving tests (yes, plural) I did and, of course, I was on my best behaviour for the duration of the test. I don't think I would be unique in that either.

Something needs to be done to weed out those drivers who can't, and never will, cut it. Regardless of age. If a driver is found to be at fault in an accident, he/she should be re-assessed based on what caused the accident. Anyone caught drink or drug driving should be put on a register of drivers to be on the look-out for. And, of course, an independent medical assessment for general fitness to drive. Not the local doctor.

But a retest? no. That would not only be practically useless as a way to deal with the situation, but it would be impractical to retest every driver every X number of years. The system creaks already with one test per lifetime.

Anyway, we're way off topic with this. It should be on one of the many, many threads covering this.

Crossing a solid white is allowed if there's an obstruction in the road so you're alright

Yeah were going off topic and yes something needs to be introduced to cut down the incompetence on the roads. I wasn't suggesting the same driving test provisional driver's need to take. Something a bit more awareness based.

What relevance is it that she could be someones mother? Are mothers immune from prosecution?

I agree on the testing but she should be prosecuted for dangerous driving causing death.

Personally I think that every car should have one of these installed, could solve many problems with insurance fraud and help keep the looneys of the road. Careless driving happening too much lately.

Having done this, and studied Roadcraft, you can make a decision not to indicate if there is no traffic around or likely to be around to benefit from indicating.

Indicators should give an early warning of an intent to change direction or lane, and the majority of times I see one on, it is for this reason.

I was taught the exact same thing when I did my test in the States and tests in UK on car truck and bikes. Indication is pointless if there is no one there to see it or its not going to benefit anyone.. Still , its a good habit to indicate regardless in my opinion.
What roadcraft did you study? I bought this book with intention of going for the Rospa Bronze on the bike. Never got around to it unfortunately . Book was very good all the same.
