Dublin is becoming ever crowded with all these foreign folk bunking 10 to a room in some city centre tenament. Rent prices are rising and so is the cost of living. So as a thought I had an Idea...

Waterford has an affordable stock of decent quality housing, needs a bit of gentrication in some areas, cheaper cost of living and could be potentially the hamburg of Ireland. Tramore could be the bray of waterford and so forth... London would not be too dissimilar in terms of location in comparison to the uk...

Will more than likely be shot down but just a thought

I really like Waterford city. The local populace is heavily consistent of savages though. And a bad Waterford city accent is horrific.

I lived in Virginia on the Meath/Cavan border for a few years and it was a lovely little town. Plus it is M3-adjacent so only 40 mins to Blanch if you need shopping.

At the time I was working in Navan so it was handy enough too but due to cutbacks I was laid off. Unfortunately though (almost) all the IT jobs are in Dublin so commuting up and down wasn't a runner long term (was costing a fortune in diesel/tolls and wear and tear on the car) and I had to move back.

Now I'm closer to work but it's costing me a fortune and it's your typical soulless anonymous apartment complex with feck all to do around it (the oh so desirable South County area - although I don't see the attraction myself).

If it were up to me I wouldn't live in Dublin at all but needs must

I lived in Waterford for 18 months back in 2000. I was in the city for 10 months and Tramore for the remainder. I really liked Tramore, but I found it very difficult to get to know anyone in Waterford.. any night I would go into the local, (Cleaboy Inn) I'd be sitting on my own for an hour.

I decided to try the local GAA club for a pint one night... I was handed a book and was asked to write down my name and address before they served me, then I was left to my own devices.

The one place I liked was Micks on the Quays... dont know if its still there, it had blue Christmas lights hanging in the window and was right bedside The Hog's Head.

Down's Bar was good if you liked a game of snooker in solitude.

It's in the city the same way Kilkenny, Newry and Armagh are "cities". To most people, a city is a large urban area with a certain metropolitan dynamic. While places like Waterford or Newry may have a historical charter etc, they're just big towns in effect.

As a Waterford person no longer living in Waterford I can say that Waterford is a nice place to be the people for the most part are ok they do have some sort of chip on their shoulders about being victimised by successive governments even the smallest thing gets blamed on the government. The nightlife is dreadful with plenty of scum lurking around.

The county is lovely it has nice beaches lovely coastal drives a beautiful mountain range it's definitely is worth a visit, would I ever move back? Maybe not but I do love going 'home' whenever I can.

Thankyou Obezyana. That is the most balanced post I have seen in 2 years or so on boards. You have put your finger on it more or less. I studied in Waterford Institute of Technologywhen it was just an RTC (regional technical college) in fact. No doubt the keyboard warriors will now descend on this thread in droves.

Only 4 weeks ago someone said the same thing about Dublin to me.

I'm not from Waterford but I have lived here for 15 years. It's nice enough really but it does have it's issues - unemployment is very high and there are a lot of vacant businesses even on the main shopping streets.

The last few years have seen a great effort to clean the place up though and make the city look nice and there's quite a lot of mostly free events on with bands/performances on various stages around the city. We just had Spraoi, Dunmore East Bluegrass festival is next week, Harvest Festival is coming up in September then Winterval.

I spent last summer in waterford.Way to many junkies and pikeys wandering around,looking for people to mug,its dog rough,and this comes from somebody who spent my formative years in summerhill in the north inner city and later finglas south.Its does have redeeming features though to be fair,every second week during the summer there is something happening in the centre of town,it has some great boozers,and no end of women of easy persuasion.

Need to invest in a large tarpaulin to cover the city with, fix up a rake load of sun lamps under the tarpaulin, slap a dash of blue paint on it.

You'd have waterford looking like a wee town on the french riviera soon enough. Blue sky, sunny , dry.

Theres a park in Fenor and theres one by the church in Tramore. And I dunno where you're getting the idea that Waterford is built on the side of the hill, theres about 3 hills in the City.
