I knew a lad who knew a lad who drank ALL of the drink. There were actually no drinks left when he had finished. People had to leave and go other places for drinks because of the lack of drinks after this fella had drank all the drinks.

A guy I know used to come in drunk, even have a lunchtime pint. Never steaming drunk or messy, but definitely under the influence.

Never forget the day our wages were late. Once off, we were gonna be paid on the monday, and apologies all round. No worries.

This wasn't good enough for him. Down tools, heads for the gate. Saw the boss on the way.

"Just to let you know, I'm sick of this paid-once-a-week bolox! From now on, I wanna be paid at the end of every day."

Not shy of a drink myself, but these guys drink lots every day.

I dunno how they do it, or can afford it!

Their health often lets go in their '50s, I find.

I lived with a pretty heavy drinker for a fortnight there. No crazy stories really; he was about 35, pretty large in all ways, liked to dance to alphabeat at 4am and used the compartments from the door of the fridge as bowls for his ramen.

the heaviest drinker i know would be my old neighbor, nicest fella you could meet. But one night at the local he sat alone with the bar tender, every five minutes or so he stood up, slowly stumbled to the window looked out and said " no one here yet pac" (pac is the bar tenders nickname) this went on and on untill pac couldn't stand it and told him to leave.

This famous local extremely high functioning alcoholic was an expert builder/stonemason back in his day. One morning, he is ensconced outside the local, waiting for it to open. 10am, the barman lets him in early. "A small Powers," is his order. Barman has just put a new bottle of Powers into the optic. The familiar order of "A small Powers," is repeated a lot. The bottle of Powers is soon empty. "A pint of cider, to put out the fire," is the next order.

Not an hour later, said man was seen a mile down the road, building a wall and not a bother on him.

A local alcoholic used to drink the taps dry in the pub (not literally), and return home and batter his wife and children. Pure scumbag.

One night, a rat got into the house. His wife succeeded in killing the rat. She then decided upon revenge. When dear husband returned from the pub, he vomited in the hallway. His wife then slung the dead body of the rat into the vomit.

The following morning, the husband wakes up with a raging hangover. As he walks to the kitchen, he sees the pile of puke... rat in the centre of it.

He allegedly never touched a drop of drink again.

Friend of mine could put away a powerful amount of drink. But he had a habit of disappearing. The most infamous incident was when he woke up at the top of a building under construction.

I strongly suspect I am the heaviest drinker I know.
I realised I was an alcoholic and as an attempt to come to terms with it (and stop drinking too) I told a few trusted people one by one over the course of a few months.

I was expecting this to be a big revelation but without exception the reaction I got from everyone was "hmmm .... yeah.... you're probably right"

Biggest drinker I knew was such a big drinker that he alienated all his friends, lost loads of jobs, got into fights, turned into a really angry, sad, scary person, would disappear for days at a time, could talk about nothing except drink and was a hot mess of a human being by his early twenties.

Now he's quit drinking and he's lovely again, every time I see him I'm so glad to have him back.

I can't talk though, I once went out in a blackout drunk and woke up with a pizza in the bed beside me and a busted knee. The worst part was that it was my left knee that was busted and the back of the right leg of my pants that was torn, so I think I might have gone out with my pants on backwards

I knew a guy called Drinkin Johnny and boy howdy could he drink. Never seen a person consume liquids quite as often and as efficiently as this guy.

And the stories! One time he got so drunk that he began mumbling incoherently and falling about making a fool out of himself. Then he only goes and does the exact same thing for the entire rest of his life!

The most memorable one I can think of was a man who fell asleep on the path with a bottle of whiskey in his hand. Whatever was left in the bottle had spilled out. When he woke up and felt the liquid on the ground he said, "someone please tell me that's blood."

I knew a woman who could put away a tremendous amount of cider. She used to ride random fellas on the bridge over looking the liffey. She was probably more of a nymphomanic than an alcoholic, but jasus she could drink.

I used to work in a pub & there's a lot of functioning alcoholics out there. Sad really.
One guy that used to come in everyday without fail sticks out in my mind though. Mostly stuck to pints but once he would have four or five in him he used to hit the poker machine. I could easily change the best part of €100 over the course of a few hours & more often than not he would leve empty handed. The drunker he got the more he gambled & gave out to the poker machine. Don't know how he afforded it.
His wife used to finish work a few hours after him & join him. She was strictly top shelf alcohol & could put it away too. What used to make me sad is that when he was talking to any of us behind the bar he was all nicey nice but as soon as he had to speak to her he basically barked at her like she was a dog. And she sat there & took it.
I believe their kids had a pretty miserable upbringing. Couldn't have been any other way with the two of them getting pissed everyday. This was back years ago when the likes of the guards & social services turned a blind eye to a lot of neglect. I'm told that only for the neighbours they would have been severely malnourished.
Horrible how a substance can have such a hold over people.
