If you could do anything profesionally - what would it be?

I work in a really great job as an IT Engineer for a engineering firm. I am 24 but earn by average more than someone 20 years older than me.. I do enjoy my job, but at heart, I would absolutely love to be a biologist focusing on curing some disease that is plaguing mankind, such as cancer.

I have thought about just dropping everything and heading back to university from scratch but it would take... at least 8 years to achieve the start of what I wish.. Since I'm already relatively progressed in my field (senior IT will probably LOL hard at 5 years (I done my Masters Parallel to work)) is it worth continuing doing what I'm doing for the rest of my life?

This brings the thought to mind, I have only met a handful of people that I know really absolutely love their jobs and wouldn't swap for the world. But I reckon most people aren't working their dreamjob ( no **** sherlock! ). Therefore - I would like you all to talk about your hopes and dreams and if you ever think you will go for it, or if you're already doing it!

Whether from films, games or just natural interest, since a kid I've always wanted to give being a soldier a go. At the moment waiting to hear back from the Reserve DF so I'll see how that works out as well as finishing my degree before I'll consider going for the army full time whether here or in the UK.

I've been learning how to use sculpting software for about six or seven years now (sporadically) and it's something I really enjoy doing, but would be nowhere near good enough to make a living out of it.

I worked as a mechanic for 11 years, and still do the odd nixer, along with restoring my classic Fiat. I love working on cars, but unless you're working for yourself the money is not there. To work for yourself, you need a serious outlay, leasing a premises, serious amount of tools, and an increasing amount of electronic diagnostic equipment. Realistically you would need an initial outlay of close to 100k.
I get more money now working in a warehouse!

I can't believe the perfect job hasn't been posted up yet. It is of course Jeremy Clarksons job! I would probably even do it for free!:D

My dream job would be a zoo keeper, but truthfully, I just don't feel it's a viable job. In Ireland, there's only 4 zoos, if I'm correct. And even then, the zoo keepers don't get paid very well. Even if I were to move abroad, there's a lot more supply than demand in most countries, and even in the US, zoo keepers only make something like $15 an hour, if they're lucky, and that's if they can even land a job in the first place. I've considered breeding exotic animals, but again, it's not very viable at all in this country, as there's not much demand for exotic animals, and if you want to make any real money, the start up costs would need to be in the tens of thousands, and you'd require trips to Europe every few months to sell your livestock.
Right now, I'm hoping to do computer science, as I feel it's a degree that would make me a lot of money, and something I feel I'd get my head around fairly easy. Once I have the money, maybe animal breeding could become a hobby on the side.

Alas I'm 24 now, unemployed and applying for jobs I don't really wanna do while struggling to think of any job that I actually do want to do.

I have a degree and a Masters but didn't get great results in either so I've realised by now that academia really isn't for me. I'm thinking of training as an actuary some day, though more so for the financial benefits and perceived "prestige" (college didn't go so well for me so I feel like I have something to prove and succeeding in a difficult profession might help with that) than for any deep desire to be working with insurance premiums and whatnot.

How is animal breeding a hobby ?? If you like animals you shouldnt even consider zoo-keeping and breeding. A degree in computer science is not necessarily going to make you a lot of money either

In any case, basing decisions like that so much on money is really not going to end well.
