Official Conor McGregor Thread (READ MOD WARNING IN OP)

OK guys,

The dust has cleared on the disaster that was the last thread. The biggest culprits won't be joining us here (Or anywhere else on the forum). Others have been warned in PMs.

This thread is a clean slate for everyone but there will be zero tolerance on it.

I remind all users to take a fresh look at the charter before posting here.

FIGHTER BASHING OF ANY KIND WILL NOT BE TOLERATED.

It doesn't take a Masters in English to know the difference between a negative opinion of somebody and name calling.

This Thread is for all things about Connor that won't go into event threads. I.E. all speculation about opponents, his twitter posts, public appearances and media.

Once a fight has been announced and an event named all news relating to that fight can go into the event thread.

My own opinion on McGrogor vs Sanchez (Finally), this is an awful fight for sanchez I think. Especially if he loses to Connor at WW he is finished. Diego gets by with half decent striking and wrestling and the rest on athleticism and aggression.

Conors footwork is just too good to be held against the fence and isnt that much smaller than Diego. If Connor loses he'll probably get his wrist slapped by Dana and told to wise up and stick to 145, worst case scenario. Diego has much much more to lose in this fight and I think his emotions will get the best of him and we'll see something similar to Brimage.

But being honest I don't see the fight happening. Dana is probably getting a bit sick of fighters calling opponents out so publicly and he and his match makers will still want to be seen as the ones pulling the strings.

Its an awful pity this is two weeks after the mayweather maidana fight imagine getting to these 2 events in one week that would be epic but wouldnt fancy staying in vegas for 2 weeks waiting for the ufc after the mayweather you'd spend some amount of $$$.

His striking is clearly his best attribute but I dont worry about his ground game at all his coach John Kavanagh had 4 fighters on the dublin card,3 won by submission and conor by TKO so I wouldnt be too worried about his BJJ hes getting coached by the right man.

I was overstating it when I said I fear for him but this is definitely Poirer's best chance of success.
Granted he almost got caught by Koch but later on he looked sneaky from the top and showed decent GnP and would have been another D'arce finish if the bell hadn't saved Koch.
I don't think he has the wrestling to take McGregor down but he's probably going to be going for it all night.

Luke barnatt is an absolute clown he was accusing Conor of buying followers on twitter there a while ago,the cheek of him to call out Wanderlei aswell no doubt a publicity stunt but I though it was hiliarious silva would ruin him in seconds the fella is going no where in the ufc he was robbed last time I though in fairness but hes still no good,very bitter and jealous man.

Wasting your time trying to educate some people(no on one here in particular just general mma fans),they like to believe he had no career before the ufc hes achieved nothing in their eyes 2 different belts in different divisions but hes done nothing.

Just because Gunni went and spent afew months training in the Gi and competing doesn't mean Conor or any other grappler needs to go to the hallowed aul US of A to do the same. Like he and all the rest of the guys say, you can become one of the best in the world training in THIS country. I think this weekend showed that. He'll never be a Damien Maia and hunt submissions off his back or pull guard, because he utilises his BJJ to get back to his feet so he can utilise his greatest weapons. His top control, guard passing, transitions etc are all excellent - and not just against people of his size or smaller. He is one of the most relentless guard passers I've ever rolled with. Tom King would tell you the same thing I'm sure, as would Gunnar. Constantly changing directions and pressures to create openings. Add in strikes and the openings increase exponentially. Did you see the lateral drop reversal he hit on Brandao at one point? Incredible timing and technique to reverse the takedown. Conor is one of the new breed in MMA in every sense of the word - a student of the game, not just a student of a game. Well rounded in every range of combat. His striking is superior to his grappling, but that doesn't mean it's in any way a weakness.

Conor Subbed Dave Hill (who is a submission fighter) to win the Cage Warriors Featherweight title. That was over two years ago now, watch that and tell me Conor ground game is a weakness. He is on a different level now to then.

Are those stats just from the UFC because if they are they're totally unquantifiable. Dustin has had 10 fights and Conor has only had 3. Hardly a fair sample range to go by..

Conor's ground game is not a weakness. I've seen him roll with Gunnar and hang with him every step of the way and it wasn't just a once off either. He more than holds his own against one of the most technical grapplers I've ever seen, day in, day out. Expecting Poirier to automatically have a huge advantage out of the gate isn't just idle speculation, it's just plain wrong.

The problem with McGregors ground game is that it was awful in his last defeat all be it four years ago,I'm sure it is very good now but obviously there are some doubts till he gets put on his back in a fight again.

Remember Gunnar went to America to improve his ground game and get his blackbelt and conor has not made that leap so you just hope Conor has came up to his level rolling with him everyday,in reality that is how you get better at jiu jitsu

Four years ago is a long time in grappling. Gunni got his BB in four years and others have too albeit be it a rare occurrence. Conors grappling is strong and certainly not a weakness, and he is an excellent purple belt. He trains with other SBG black belts, browns and purples on a daily basis, not only Gunnar.

Gunni was graded up to brown belt by John Kavanagh, and considers him his main coach. I think Conor is in more than safe hands right where he is. Comparing someone's abilities as a white belt to when they are a purple belt is a bit ridiculous.

We don't even have to make assumptions like that (you're still right btw).
There's more to grappling than wins by submission. Saturdays fight was on the ground for a decent portion, Diego is a solid grappler and Conor controlled him, passed his guard, defended multiple leg attacks. Eddie Bravo commented on his jits after the Holloway fight.
But as with everything, Joe Public wi t take any notice until he subs somebody.

I'm sure you'll agree 4 years is long time in grappling - especially as you transition up the initial ranks.
I know he got his purple belt >2 years ago. It's not unrealistic that he was a white belt when he list to Duffy, at best a recent blue belt.

The only way he would get a title shot straight after Poirier would be if he absolutely wrecks him in devastating fashion.

It will however jump him up the rankings and he would be in the kind of spot where an injury to a title contender would leave him in with a shot of filling in.

Exactly what you said. His training partner is Gunnar Nelson, one of the best BJJ artists in the business, albeit lacking in experience. Conor's striking is completely on-point, so he just needs to put in a few weeks of hard work on the ground with Gunni, keep the striking sharp, and he won't have too many problems with Poirier.
