Kids playing outside - how late is generally considered reasonable.

There's been a bit of an altercation on my estate between some neighbours regarding kids playing loudly on the Green and outside people's houses. I haven't been involved myself but have been hearing both sides from two different neighbours and been just going hmmm, yes, I know.

Just wondering what time, in general, you would consider it reasonable for children to be expected to keep the noise down or be called in by parents?

And therein lies the danger -

Parents assume the roads are quieter, drivers assume there wouldn't be any children out at that hour. At least when the road is busy children have no option but to play elsewhere, like on the green where they're supposed to play.

That's notwithstanding the fact that they shouldn't be out that late at night and then sleeping in till the afternoon the next day.

Who said the kids be sleeping all day? Kids around my street be out playing about till 10.30/11PM and be back out by 10.30am the next morning

I must go round and tell all their mammys, the PC brigade on the internet think its too late for their kids to be out at that time. Who are you to tell anyone what/when/how their kids shoyuld play, what time, where?

I'm not telling anyone anything. I'm giving my opinion in a discussion on an internet forum. There's no need to get so worked up about it. I'm not saying you have to do anything either.

I think it depends on the age. For instance I think 4 year olds should only be out until 6pm at the latest (they're still basically toddlers at that age), 9-10 year olds should only be out until 9pm at the latest and late teens should be definitely at home before 12am.

When they are 10 feet from my doorstep screaming, stamping on flower beds and leaving their rubbish strewn around all the way from midday up to 1-2am, I think I personally have every right to be annoyed. Never outside their own homes doing the same thing funnily enough.

As long as they are not causing any trouble I reckon around 11/12.

When I was a kid we all stayed out till around this time during the summer playing and there were no problems.

If you live in an estate you have to be willing to listen to kids playing

Unsupervised children out late at night what possibly could go wrong. I mean there would be uproar by people if one gets kidnapped. And the unsupervised part gets left to the side, poor parenting also. Most people who leave there kids out that late at night have 0 clue what their up to.

That is a very selfish attitude. I am all for children being outside and playing but if I am getting up at five in the morning for work I certainly don't want them screaming and shouting at midnight. How about they learn a wee bit respnsability also live in the country aye OK because it is that easy to do :rolleyes:

Your forgetting the type of parent your up against. want the kid up and out early as possible and in late as possible and straight to bed.

Not saying as a kid i did not stay out till 10:30 ish but we at least knew to keep the noise down stop will the football off the walls and the screaming. used to play hide and seek from about 9 till we went in.

Yeah there's such a lot of kidnappings in Ireland perhaps kid shouldn't be let out at all . At least that way they wouldn't be inconveniencing adults with the noise they create when playing.

Me, I was always allowed out until dark as were my kids , none of us got kidnapped or into any trouble for that matter .

That was in the good old days before we had the internet to ask strangers how we should parent our children.

Everyone is giving different times but does it not vary greatly depending on the age of the child? Till dark would be grand for say a 12 year old or whatever but a 6 or 7 year old being out till 10.30 at night is madness!! IMO of course.

Age, location, time of year and maturity I suppose would all come into it for me so I have no answer, I'll tell you when the time comes

My mother was at home and knew I was either on the field or one of the roads in the estate,much like all my friends parents did.Don't know many parents who'd be in bed by 11.30pm in fairness.

Still pretty much the norm round here,and in my mothers estate.Was/is a lot worse that kids in North Clondalkin could be doing besides playing tip the can or heads and nods for a few evenings during the summer.Most of the neighbors recognized that,bar the odd curtain twitcher.

Mid-summer, the latest the sun sets is around ten past ten, and it will remain light to twilighty for the best part of an hour after. I've manys the time marvelled at how it was still quite bright (relatively) at 11pm. Pitch blackness (and in mid-summer it's never really pitch black) would happen around half eleven.

And it's usually dark enough for the kids to be coming on in at around 10.15

9-10 was the normal time for me during summer when I was a kid, soon as I turned a teenager I set my own times haha, mad how fast teenage years go by

So long as they have been fed and done their homework & chores, then I don't see what is wrong with letting them stay outside until their bedtime.

Better outside socialising & getting exercise than sitting in front of a TV or computer for hours.

Saying that, they should also be considerate of others and keep the noise level low after 10pm.

the problem is, children these days generally don't keep the noise level down, i've said it before but it is nothing strange to see 4 - 10 year olds kicking a football or hitting a sliotar off our bedroom windows at 11pm at night because some planner (or whoever decided these things) somewhere like you assumed parents would actually parent their children and that people would be considerate of their neighbours and so they put in communal back gardens.

throw in parents getting drunk/on facebook too "busy" to care and you have good neighbours suffering more than the "curtain twitchers" did back in the day,

i once had a 7 year old tell me, his mother told him to play in our garden because she was trying to get his baby sister off to sleep, he lived across the road and had his own garden plus the big green area to play in, but who cares about my baby also trying to sleep right? as long as he wasn't inside playing xbox or waking her baby! :rolleyes:

also children seem to have forgotten this delightful indoor activity, both my husband and i used to love as a child, reading a good book before going to sleep,

i suppose why should they when they can hang around on street corners at 11pm....

i know which one i'd rather my daughter doing.
