Kids playing outside - how late is generally considered reasonable.

There's been a bit of an altercation on my estate between some neighbours regarding kids playing loudly on the Green and outside people's houses. I haven't been involved myself but have been hearing both sides from two different neighbours and been just going hmmm, yes, I know.

Just wondering what time, in general, you would consider it reasonable for children to be expected to keep the noise down or be called in by parents?

I think 9 is reasonable depending on age, and obviously time of year, when it gets dark etc.

That being said there are some young kids here left out till 11 or so and i pity those kids as their parents dont care too much what they get up to.

I would say 9-9:30. The other night the kids on my estate were still out roaring and shouting at 10:30-11 when I was trying to get the baby to sleep. Close the windows and the house is like a furnace. They're regularly out at 8am on weekend mornings too. I think 9am/pm is reasonable.

Thems the rules. There are no "times", Mother Nature sets the curfew.

There is a particular child living next to me that I want to strangle. I don't mind the sound of children playing. The whack of a football doesnt faze me. But this one particular child shouts to her mother, and after calling her name six, seven times with no response, keeps shouting the same word over and over again, until it starts to sound like some sort of siren. Eventually the mother responds and they have a shouting conversation for a minute or two.

Then twenty minutes later the shouting starts again.

Thats what my Ma used to say to me. As I always lost watches and didn't have a phone.

always used the street lights as a guide to when it's time to be home.

I think it all depends on age but I wouldn't see much wrong with them being out until half 10-11 o clock, it's the summer, I used to live for those nights. Sure it's annoying but for the vast majority of kids they will only have another month or so of it and then we will be back to normal.

Coming out my friends house the other night there were still around 6-8 kids out playing at a little after 12 o clock, a couple of them were smallies too, about 6-7 years old. I really don't think that's appropriate not least because some of your neighbours will be in bed at that stage and the sound of them kicking a ball around the place at that hour is just rediculous, no signs of parents calling them in or anything at that stage.

It depends on the family set up. If they don't have to be up at a particular time in the morning there is no harm in them having a later bedtime than is normal for other kids. Though if they are old enough to play outside at night, it wouldn't be a bad idea to start encouraging them to think about other people and to try play more quietly past a certain time. But from the adults' side of things, if you live on an estate with lots of children, you need to learn to live with the sounds of children playing, even though sometimes it's at a time you find very annoying.

We'd always stay out till it was getting dark, if we were particularly rebellious we'd retreat to the back garden and mess about in there on borrowed time with "ten more minutes" barked at us about every 20 minutes :rolleyes:

There was the summer where we built a go-kart/pedal-bus/trailer/chair thing that towed behind a bike and me and one or two of the lads would be hammering nails until the early hours when we were about 12. And that's not even that long ago, scary how the console generation never seem to go outside other than to get pissed in a field.

Just be glad they're not starching their eyes in front of an Xbox.

if its anywhere near a public road then kids shouldn't be playing at dusk let alone until its fully dark. kids actions are difficult to predict at the best of times, add in the fact that they are harder to see and its dark or getting dark and you don't have a good combination of circumstances.

Usually it's everybody in here at about 9pm. Saw one father running around in panic looking for his toddler who he left in the care of other kids,the eldest looked about 9.Of course the toddler wandered off and panic ensued,she was found safe and well but in fairness the parents never even bothered to come check on the kids for hours.

In the Summer,I think about 9 or so is apt.As usual there's always the few who let the kids out in the morning and never bother to make sure they are ok from one end of the day to the other.At the other extreme,I have one set of parents near me who won't allow their kid the freedom of playing with others in the area,it's terrible seeing the child being brought outside for a token few minutes as if it was a chore for the parents and brought back in,meanwhile the other kids are having great fun while all he can do is look on then is brought back inside.

Having children out that late at night is ridiculous, get them out early in the morning instead.

Thanks for the replies. I'm with the 9 o clock or so brigade. I think by 10 o clock loud shouty games of football and kids screaming their heads off as they play chasing is a bit inconsiderate on the neighbours or the people living around the Green.

Used to be out til 11/11:30 playing football or hanging about on the field in the estate when we were kids.The odd time we'd play tip the can or heads and vollies on the road and some curtain twitcher would call the guards,who'd eventually show up and tell us to be quiet.You could tell they didn't mean it though!

Midnight was teenage curfew with most of the group I hung about with.

You think that's bad ? In my place there is this one kid who keeps getting up on my parked motorbike and pretending to ride it. I've been shouting at him out the window for weeks now to get off it but I always catch him back up on it within a few days, alarm on it ringing and him still sitting on it.

Last week was the final straw when the kid made me run out of petrol on the motorway- my bike doesn't have a petrol gauge so I keep an eye on the miles to know when to fill up. The kid had turned the miles back to 000 a few days previous and I didn't cop it until I ran out of petrol on the motorway whilst on my way to a wedding.

Luckily for me the bike has a reserve tank. It took me a good 20 minutes to get it going again as the engine was flooded for a bit. If I hadn't of got it going I was missing the wedding of a good friend over that little kid :mad:

It's so annoying as I've no idea where the kid actually lives or who his parents are. I'd love to just catch him the next time and give him a belt across the face, he'd not go near my bike again after a red face but you can't do that these days apparently.
