Where have you been hiding? There's a dedicated unit in Beaumount Hospital for 20 years doing these implants? The process has been available since the 70s.

I got an implant done 2 years ago and knowing the HSE I doubt we'll see the adults getting bilateral implants for another 5-10 years.

Question for anyone who actually has a cochlear implant: How do you swim/shower/ wash your hair with it? I've been somewhat mystified by the whole process.

I don't have one but I know people who do, you just take it off when in water or playing sports like football.

I've a friend whose daughter got them done and it has made a world of difference to her. She has known nothing else since birth.

€32k is not a drop in the ocean compared to the increase in her quality of life.

Oh calm down I'm fully aware of that as I got it done there myself 2 years ago. :rolleyes:

Aye for each ear it's €16 k. Beaumount offer the implants for free of charge and to avail of them you have to go through a screening process. Then they see if you are eligible for the implant.

I was under the impression that part of the reason that people were campaigning for bilateral implants for kids is because if they don't get them as a kid then after a certain age as your neural plasticity diminishes, and with it the ability to hear even using the implant. Does this only apply to people who were deaf from birth then or is my information completely mistaken?

It depends on how severe your hearing loss is, so no you don't have to be born deaf to avail of a cochlear implant. For example a child may have suffered ear infections which may unable the child to hear properly. So therefore he/her may avail of a implant.
