I think Germany winning the thing outright was justified. They were consistently the best team. Still, I'm sad Messi didn't lift the trophy and I'm disappointed it wasn't a South American team who won. Kinda get the impression that this stuff means a lot more to them than it does to us Europeans. In Germany you'd get the feeling that they won't really care about this after time has passed whereas in places like Argentina they remember stuff like this forever.

Nah I don't think any country would be like that if they won the World Cup, much less Europe who take football very seriously. England would be celebrating it for a long time, and if a first time World Cup winner actually won it, like Netherlands or Portugal then you could bet they would too. Hell, Ireland still hasn't forgotten Italia 90, and we only got to the quarterfinals. Imagine the reaction if we by some chance actually got to the finals, let alone actually won it.

But this is Germany's first victory as a unified nation as well, so it might be all the more special.

I've always been optimistic about Ireland...even when there's been heartbreak and severe beatings. I used to think we just need to get this or that player back and a decent manager etc etc. But over the last couple of years with the Euros debacle and not even having a realistic sniff of qualifying for Brazil 14...combining this with the advancing of teams like USA, Algeria, Costa Rica, Colombia*...I really think we have fallen way behind and may never (in its current format) qualify for another WC again. Of course if we somehow manage to bring though a group of youngsters who play without the fear and low confidence of our current crop, we'd have a chance. But I cant see it happening. I am getting ready for decades of scrapping it out for 4th place in WC qualifying groups with the likes of N.I. and Lithuania.

We could make it to the Euros with the expansion, but I'd fear for us.

*these are teams we would have beaten with ease in days gone past...except for Columbia perhaps, that would be a more even contest IMO.

Rodriguez had 3 and Muller had 2 hence why Messi got Golden Ball award

That said, Rodriguez was easily best player of the tournement

Obviously they care now and will for the days that follow. I just get the impression that stuff like this gets written into history for a lot of South American countries though, becomes sort of an identity thing for them, whereas with European countries, yeah they're excited but it's not quite the same thing. It's different to Ireland doing well or Costa Rica too. We're a small country and not traditionally a footballing nation, so it would be kind of unbelievable if we did that well.

Funnily 1966 was not mentioned by the English press or people this time around or at any of the last 3 world cups at least. We know we are not going to win but at least we get to the tournament. seems to be the Scots and Irish that are more bothered about it than we are.

Must be horrible always being the ginger stepchild though, always looking up to the bigger brother who actually has won something on the biggest stage at some point. A thing Ireland and Scotland will never manage.

Still do. Any team that has won the World Cup is entitled to have stars on their shirt depicting the number of victories. It shows you are part of an elite number of nations that have triumphed on the greatest stage.
