Clare GAA discussion thread

Thought I'd start this thread as haven't found one of the same.

So, 2010.. new decade... new beginnings? With the aim of the League being to get back into Division 1, could Clare also achieve success in Munster this year?

As well as a proposed friendly versus Cork, Ger O'Loughlin has a good load of matches to blood players from U-21's into the senior game. With the opponents in the League not posing a major threat some would argue Clare wont get as much preparation as Div 1 teams, but maybe it will give them an opportunity to focus on their strength and conditioning?

So, Clare face Waterford on Sunday at 2pm in Ballyduff Upper.. I think they should win against this weakened Waterford side, but I think it will be close tbh. But could Waterford topple us in the pre season tournament?

I really don't get the uproar about the club fixtures going ahead, surely as the dates have been set for months in advance it would be easy to allow for this in training schedules.

And presumably it means he can't play for the footballers in Carlow this weekend ?

Re the round of club fixtures played. These would have been part of the masters fixture list I'd imagine. It's not like they came out of the blue.
AFAIK this is the first time a Clare managers request to postpone games hasn't been granted. Msybe thats what has Davy so upset. On this occasion the clubs themselves collectively decided enough. Why the clubs would want to hinder county players is a ludicrous notion. As if clubs like Clonlara or cratloe want to see their club mates fail in a county jersey.

Re Podge suspension. Is it just fir the code he got the red card ie sent off in hurling therefore suspended in hurling?

sorry make that sunday, the clare v carlow fixture will be re-fixed for sunday the 13th of july next at 2 o clock

credit to carlow gaa for holding out and sportingly agreeing to re-fix the game , the original time and date was for 24 hours earlier

I think Podge only recieves a 1 game ban, falling in this category:

Category II offences, which get a one-game, or two-game ban for repeat offenders, covers issues such as striking or attempting to strike with arm, elbow, hand or knee, striking or attempting to strike with a hurley, with minimal force, kicking or attempting to kick, with minimal force, behaving in a way which is dangerous to an opponent, spitting at an opponent, contributing to a melee or abusive language towards a referee, umpire or sideline official. That should cover most matches we watch every summer.

Clubs want the games played because they don't have a clue where they stand and teams are waiting around for a whole summer only to have their season rushed then for a finish, the situation last year of a 100 day gap between fixtures was a joke, through in dual clubs and you have a farce of a situation.

IMO, the reason Davy is upset is because everything isn't going right for them at the moment, back when we were winning league games and everything was looking rosey everything was fine.

Davy is upset because once again he was found wanting on the line. He has allowed himself to be distracted by events and actions outside the panel and has allowed them to disrupt his approach. Just play the cards he has to the best of his ability with some of the finest young hurlers in the country or alternatively as Cusack said they will be another Clare teams that didn't reach their potential.

After the loss to Cork he wanted the club fixtures off so he could concentrate on the qualifiers - even though a round of the club championship was set in stone. He still had the guts of 2 weeks after that to prepare the team. He got his selection among other things arse about face against Cork I think - and didn't like to be called out on that hence the row with Peter O'Connell. The clubs were more than entitled to make their stand and he should have been bigger and seen that - otherwise the whole thing is in a heap again as it was last year.
I understand what he's saying about them having been pulled all over the place with the cup and what not after winning the AI - but there's no reason why with proper preparation and rest etc that they cant peak again this summer. I think the bigger problem is mental tiredness - and fair enough, he has to try and get that right.
But fighting with Peter O'Connell showed poor judgement and all this talk of dark forces is over the top - there is no conspiracy against him - it's just that he wants his own way all the time and gets worked up if he doesn't get it.

Ya he was on the sideline the last day, not sure how much longer Shane is out for but I don't think we will see him this weekend.

I think everyone has their own preferences as to how the club vs intercounty agenda should go. In one way its hard to not feel pity for the clubs who have done their best to develop the players from underage up and to then get very little access to them. Also hard to blame intercounty management wanting their panel to be wrapped in cotton wool in between championship games so that there is smaller chance of injury.

I don't think its fair on the club game and the fixtures that were in place for a long time should have gone ahead.

Hoping for a better performance Saturday and that with more games the fluidity will return.

About 3 to 4 weeks I heard over the weekend before O Donnell is back in action. Would be great to see him back for the 21s tonight week.
Nicky O Connell another who was out of the running last Sat due to injury.

In regards to Club v. County, County has to come first every day of the week, everything should be feeding up to the county inter-county team, I don't think anyone is questioning that.

What is being questioned is that last year there was chaos in the club championship, to alleviate this there was a master fixture list drawn up and the clubs were told that it would be stuck to no matter what, come the first bump in the road that was looked to have been thrown out. I don't think any Club would have a problem postponing a round of games if something unforeseen like a draw comes up, but considering there was always a chance we'd lose the first round and there was no Plan B in place by Davy it all seems a bit wrong.

I like the way though no one is talking about our extremely poor performance last weekend, rather how poor Davy is being treated, if we don't do something drastic we are going to be beaten out the gate on Saturday.

It should never come to club vs County. Look at Limerick,Tipp, Cork and Kilkenny.. all have progressed their championships,,,all have been successful (Limerick limited I'll give).
I disagree that County always comes first. Without club there is no county.

Plan B by Davy was to throw a sop to the clubs in December and then in July get his own way. Now he has a problem. He can't have it both ways.

I don't know that Davy is being treated badly; the only people that thinks that he is being treated badly is Davy and his entourage. It's time for Croke park to set a fixtures list for counties that are not competent at it..

Ask your clubs this..,. who elected the fixtures committee? No one.. they were handpicked...

Clare have been studied. Last years tactics won't work. An example, is John Conlon last year against Cork, contested and broke the ball on the sideline,Podge/Kelly broke in and took it away. That's not working this year.

I'll bet Davy will be working this week to come up with new elements. That's what he and his team needs to focus on get one step ahead of Wexford.

If county is given preference every day of the week as you state, club structure will suffer.
Why should every club hurler suffer because 30 have to be wrapped in cotton wool.
Its the work done at underage level by clubs that lays the foundation for compstitive county underage teams. This in turn aids a strong senior set up.

The messing that Davy alluded to was that half a round of club games were ran off as per masters fixtures. County players were with their clubs from around Wed to Sun. Is that the cause for last Saturdays under performance?
They even went to KK that Sunday evening to play a chalkenge the weekend if those club games.

All this is simply our county manager behaving like a spoilt child. All he's going to do is drive a bigger wedge between clubs on one side and county set up on the other

the club arguement is nothing to do with last saterday , it is a completely different issue.

in a nutshell wexford exposed what weakness we had in the 3 or 4 bad performances in the lead up to last saterday ,

particularly the sweeper role which was our ace card on the run to the all ireland final last year, for a start it seems to be the only possition in the pitch that pat donnellan can play, and his switch back after 20 mins showed a major shift in the play , although it was slightly hampered by podges sending off it had a major impact on our comeback

kilkenny showed dublin up the following day when they kept dublin down to 1-9 over 70 mins , cork and jbm had something similar in store for us last month also, a revert back to the old wont defend our tittle but it will go along way to stopping the rot

in my opinion unless we do , clare will be out of the championship and peter o connell will have been proving right all along.......time for a rethink davy!!!!!

I think Davy just said he won't do interviews with him, don't think he's banned from matches or press boxes or anything. Davy and Pat and Peter O'C all gave their side of it in the Champion today.

It is sad to see this carry on. Davy has given magnificent service to Clare and entertainment to every genuine hurling fan. As a goalie he had few peers and as a manager he is unquestionably out and out Clare and devoted to his county. It is sad because It is getting to where his actions and words are becoming delusional and are taking over a discussion that should be about nothing other than the team..

That is the sad thing about it. Clare have probably the most gifted bunch of young hurlers in the country at present who require sound and sensible leadership. It just seems to be such a waste of talent to have this kind of distraction indeed messing going on and no need for it what-so-ever. The years fly by and Clare just cannot afford to throw this year away, it will take some effort to get back on track if they do.

Is this not a form of bullying? As another poster said, why does Fitz even bother to read such reports!

He did a fine job last year in managing the Clare team to the AI title. It should be remembered though that the players at his disposal are terrific. They have been nurtured right up from schoolboys and won titles at minor and under 21 level playing a super brand of hurling. They were always destined to win a senior title albeit not so soon.

The work invested in developing these players was done by very good people who deserve the height of praise. Hopefully that work will not be undone by this mans antics. For a man who proclaims to be a victim if bullying he shows scant regard for people.

In KK the football is normally run off in Nov/Dec and sometimes into the following year that is for those clubs that bother to line out in the football championship at all - many don't.
