Clare GAA discussion thread

Thought I'd start this thread as haven't found one of the same.

So, 2010.. new decade... new beginnings? With the aim of the League being to get back into Division 1, could Clare also achieve success in Munster this year?

As well as a proposed friendly versus Cork, Ger O'Loughlin has a good load of matches to blood players from U-21's into the senior game. With the opponents in the League not posing a major threat some would argue Clare wont get as much preparation as Div 1 teams, but maybe it will give them an opportunity to focus on their strength and conditioning?

So, Clare face Waterford on Sunday at 2pm in Ballyduff Upper.. I think they should win against this weakened Waterford side, but I think it will be close tbh. But could Waterford topple us in the pre season tournament?

This has happened time and time again, not just under Davy's tenure and I think for clubs its just a case of enough is enough.

In times past its often been club delegates that attended these meetings regarding postponements, the fact that club managers/trainers attended highlights the clubs unwillingness to bend on this issue.

Last yr, first round was played c 3rd weekend of June, 2nd round 3rd week of September.

Frankly I couldn't be more delighted they told them where to shove it especially after last years farce, the rest of the hurlers in the county deserve to play a few games a year on a fine summer day :cool:. Although to be fair as you say this carry on has been going on alot longer than just during the current tenure.

I am sure they will be plenty of "I told you so" from the intercounty management if one of the big guns gets injured, but feic it anything could just as easily happen in a training match.

eire og would be looking at that type of view with a fairly jaundiced eye considering they lost out on shane o`donnell for the county championship due to an injury picked up training with clare.

the clubs are fed up with being bumped around the place.

as regards preparing for the qualifiers, the idea that a week of training now would make any difference strikes me as ludicrous.
the object of the excercise now has to be having the team physically and mentally fresh for our first qualifier, simplifying the tactical set up and being ruthless regarding team selection

after that the result will take care of itself

I was in the park this evening, Newmarket beat Tubber easily, Crusheen beat Kilmaley by a point. I overheard a few Kilmaley people talking about the state of the Junior B, apparently they topped the group with Ogonnelloe and the Bridge, Kilmaley and Ogonnelloe were top because of scoring difference, all good, only thing is Pat Fitz decreed that because of home refs that scoring differences can't be used, so there'll be a 3 way play off.

Also, the "conspiracy" of Davy, in his world all the hurling refs had a meeting the week before the Cork game and Davy was discussed and it was agreed that something would have to be done about him.

Score difference cannot be used if there is even one walkover in a group. nothing to do with home refs.
I think there was at least walkover.. no conspiracy there.

I only overheard what was being said, Killanena gave a walk over to the 3 teams involved and the home ref thing was the reason that was given

Home ref is a joke. If there was even a smidgeon of interest in developing the refs in clare the would each team to nominate a ref. to take charge of four games in the other divisions and they might even get a few new refs out of it.

That way there would be no home refs and no rows over dodgy decisions over a biased ref.

That is untrue.

Ogonnelloe played Killanena. Ogonnelloe won

Kilmaley played Killanena. Killanena won

Killanena gave a walkover to Sixmilebridge.

Kilmaley , Ogonnelloe and Sixmilebridge all finished with 8 points each.

Kilmaley had the best scoring difference, followed by Sixmilebridge, and then Ogonnelloe

Scoring differences could not be taken into account because of the walkover Killanena gave to Sixmilebridge

After the Kilmaley-Tubber-Tulla fiasco Senior last year they have to keep a tight reign on the rules. It's his job anyway. The clubs shouldn't need to be policing the administrators....

I vaguely remember reading some general GAA rules related to this issue of play-offs and scoring difference somewhere before - Cant remember the detail of the rules - was a few years back but I'd said there is good chance there is something online if someone wants to track them down. Not sure if there is anything about walkovers.

Surely though walk overs should be allowed for, especially at the lower grades where they are more common

And is it true? Sounds like an easy thing to make up, what with the dual player comments, etc... if you're going to say there is disharmony in the camp, and a player has walked it... if you didn't know anything about the players personalities, he'd be the one you'd say.

Decent effort from the footballers there but falling short in the end by 4 points, Kerry a bit too strong in the second half but the continuing improvements in performance levels is very encouraging.

good performance by the footballers in defeat, had kerry on the ropes on a number of occasions . good to see signs of progress after a descent league , we still lack a bit up front in the forward line but there are plenty of good young players coming up through the ranks which will boost things next year
great display by the defense in particular kevin hartnet and deane ryan in the full back line, jamie molone came on for the black carded shane hickey early in the game and had a stormer of a game as did garry brennan, sean collins and shane mcgrath were the best of our forwards and podge was as industrious as ever

but the telling part was down to kerrys ability to convert there scores and turning defense into attack paul guiney probably there best or there forwards

no gouch for kerry today how much of a difference to the scoreboard he would have made is unknown, clare dominated most of the possession for much of the game although conceded at least 4 or 5 points from stray passes in the middle of the field

a decent performance by clare progress has been made this year, kept kerry sweating until the end as the kingdom were made use all five gears in the process

Where did I state it would be revealed on Sunday? All I did was to include davys quote about talking about it at the end of the season possibly. If they say anything now I guarantee you they won't get another good refereeing decision ever again. Other counties know about this issue but won't talk about it for the same reasons.

there is an issue with davy when it comes to duel players he has made no bones on it , but at the start of the year he tried to put his foot down on the issue but failed

how he expected the two collins brothers to choose him over his father is beyond me , as far as i know he gave them an ultimatum on the issue and the other cratloe lads were far from happy with him for it, threatening to leave the panel if the collins brothers left

blood is thicker then water .......and club v county is the same, all them lads grew up together they were hardly going to turn there backs on each other now , last years vice captain made the same sacrifice when standing up for his club mate half way through the championship and missed out on an all ireland medal in the process

aidan walsh has since blowing davy's theory out the window so as far as i am concerned the duel argument is over with , but there will always be far fetched stories bouncing around the place when things are not going well

if there was any scandal it was the clare county board asking for an investigation into james mcgrath's refereeing . last year when we lost to cork in the same round in munster it was all barry kelly's fault ,

the truth is we have an awfull record in the munster championship in the last 14 years since the qualifiers were introduced and rarely at the same level as everyone else

as far as i know it was always set for the august weekend , the initial idea behind it starting so late was so teams would be still in championship mode heading into munster like last year when we had miltown and cratloe going close in the intermediate and senior club championships

you would think they would run the cusack cup/ garry cups ect... over the summer months to keep non inter county players interested

i assume if the hurlers are still involved in the all ireland come august cratloe probably will try and hold off again until the inter-county stuff is over

hopefully the clare footballers can stay involved in the championship for another few weeks too the draw will be made monday morning at half 8 the possible teams that they can meet are ( as far as i know)

the footballers will meet carlow next saterday week in the 2nd round of the qualifiers at dr cullen park

it could provide fuel to the duel player debate if the hurlers beat wexford next week in cusack park as they will be due to play the same day , i would imagine the two collins brothers will go with the hurlers

while they will be a big loss it will give a few of the younger lads a chance to nail down a first team place, jamie malone would probably come in for podge, while the chance is there in my opinion for the inclusion of eoin cleary into the forward line in sean's place should the hurlers beat wexford

it also gives the lads the chance to show their worth under the favorites tag, something that they did not deliver on in the first round of the munster championship against waterford at cusack park

the fact that we have to travel to carlow will make the task harder but this the best possible draw available to us , i don't think any one would fancy a trip to omagh or newry ,
but looking at the amount of division 3/4 teams that would be available to meet in round 3 this is a must win game and a great chance for us to leave a mark on the qualifiers ,

for clare football to be still involved in championship come mid to late july would be a major achievement and to win another 1 or two games would cap off a great years progress heading into the club championship's come august

Sorry to break the bad news but nearly 100% that if Clare win then a game against one of the other winners of 2B is the result, so basically 1 of the following

Cavan v Roscommon
Tyrone v Monaghan/Armagh
Down v Kildare

There's a fair amount of quality there - 2 Division 1 teams, 3 Division 2 teams and the 2 teams from Division 3 who got promoted to Division 2. I'd expect Clare to get the win over Carlow but I think it's hard to see them progress beyond that.
