Bloody hell, could easily have been a 3 car pile up. I'd say the 3rd driver needs an even stiffer drink!
I watched it a few times, but did the Passat at the last second decide to break and turn left?
Just goes to show how important having ABS is, no ABS at that speed they would have ploughed straight in.

Yeah exactly what happened put on his indicator on at the last second too, 100% on the ABS, my car juddered a lil bit near the end.

Haven't had my heart race that fast in a while, I could see the third car flying towards us too.

He came quite close to smaking the wall when he went to the other side of the road.
Complete luck that number 1) no one was standing there and number 2) that no car was coming the opposite way as a head on would have been inevitable.

That's all too common I'm afraid, I've seen cars, vans and trucks, including drivers of artics do that. A friend (full licence) used to do that regularly, his reasoning was you have to indicate because there's a right hand curve, not because you want to take a later exit. Thankfully he hasn't done it in a while so something must have clicked.

You where well aware off what was going on, you knew there was possibiltiy he would take that left turn,.. The guys behind,well their concentration was taken off the road for a split second, obviously by the cyclist to their left and they probably only glanced. That split second as you glanced in your rear view mirror will stay with you for a long time, scary stuff:eek:

Ya see this is why I was weary of posting the video. I was somewhat expecting to get "a licking" form some corner or another.

I'd say all 4 cars Abs was required! Mines kicked in for less than a second right at the very end of the braking, not even sure if you can see the camera judder so it wasn't an emergency stop.

I was keeping my eye on the cyclist myself, he was cycling against the flow of traffic after all, hard not to notice him. Not much more I felt I could have done I feel. I was well behind the car in front and driving well within the speed limit.

Yeah, so i doubt that their move to the other side of the road was anything other than an instinctive evasive maneuvre, which could eaily have resulted in a fatal head on.

Is the recommended action in this case to take your medicine and tail-end the driver in front rather than risk a head on?

I'd believe it depends entirely on if you have been reading the road ahead, if you have had clear vision and knew there was nothing oncoming, a evasive manoeuvre to the opposite hard shoulder would be ok, but if your unaware of the road ahead, ditch it, perform emergency stop manoeuvres, or rear end the car in front.

Personally, and I know it's hard to judge as it is an instinct reaction, but if I knew I wasn't going to stop then I'd turn to the left and try and squeeze between the car or the wall or even just hit the wall.
I'd rather that then smack into any other cars at speed and possibly take someones life.
In fact a situation like that happened to me a few years back.
I was on my way home to Waterford after dropping off my then girlfriend to the airport. This was before the motorway to Waterford opened up and it happened after the small few km of M9 had finished and you had winding narrow roads till about Carlow.
On one of the blind bends there was another road that people could turn into.
I think the limit was 80kph there and as I was coming into the bend I so suddenly a car indicating to turn right and I had maybe 2/3 seconds to react.
Line of cars traveling the other way so I turned left and held on as it crashed through the wall.
Had an Avensis at the time and to say it's strong is an understatement.
Luckily I only suffered a blown tyre and damaged wing but lived to tell another tale.
Group of tourists stopped to help and before I knew it I was on my way back to Waterford.
Now that was a brown trouser moment.
Those drivers did well IMO and so did the OP.

Not a dig at you at all, your reactions couldn't have been better. My point was to the poster of the post I quoted about the guys behind not paying attention which I thought was unfair. You were all the victim of a driver making an unexpected turn

Nah, don't agree with that, I can clearly see that he didn't have to brake too hard maybe if he had panicked(which he had no need to)he could have floored the brakes! but as is clearly shown in the footage he was well clear off an impact! and as he has stated his ABS only engaged for a milli sec.......

Nah, I wasn't saying that they weren't paying attention, I was merely saying something as simple as a cyclist passing can make you 'glance', and look what could have happened. I'm a professional driver and I'm sure I would have 'glanced' at that cyclist! Just on that particular occasion 'things' could have happened... It was like The Perfect Storm.

The Court needs a formal written statement, taken from a Garda, with the required legal declaration before and after the statement, and a 'chain of evidence' for the video recording. It's a PITA like most legal stuff, but it does work. Take 30-60 minutes to make a formal statement, and the Gardai will take it from there.

I sent them a link from youtube of the "wrong way driver" and just got a thank you email back. As I was not a witness as such that's understandable.
