Paint like that can be clayed off Jen but if you didn't want to go to the bother of getting clay, petrol or white spirits on a rag will work too. Just don't rub too hard, nice and gently with little to no pressure and just let the petrol/spirits do the work. Give the area a wash afterwards and apply a bit of wax

Anywho, I have some clay at home buried somewhere. Just means I'll have to do the whole car instead of that little bit cos y'know yourself, it'll escalate quickly!

Basically my Volvo needs a clutch and I suspect a flywheel.

before x engine number the fitted a single mass, and after a dual mass.

Mine falls into the latter.
The engine codes are the same so I'm just trying to see if the boxes are the same, so I can make the swap.

A new DMF is nearly more then the car is worth at this stage too. on top of €300~ for clutch and slave

Shortly after that I saw BMstuff in the 540i on Bolton street

Or at least I saw a silver 540i E39. Can't be too many of them about!

I think I'm going to go for a CU loan for the new car, what do people think? I was thinking about trying for 5K as that would cover initial purchase price, tax and insurance for the year along with a little left over for repairs/problems.

I don't think it's a good idea to be getting a loan for tax and insurance to be honest. It's like in the boom times people got mortgages and included the price of a new car in it. You'll be paying interest on something that will have expired a year or 2 ago.

Fair point, I don't actually think I'll need to anyway as I've got the amount needed to tax a 2.2 for the year already and Insurance won't roll around until September either so I should have that covered too, bar of course the cost to switch to an e39.

I'd agree with mm. Whatever about getting a loan for the car I wouldn't be borrowing anything extra for tax insurance repairs. I don't know what your habits are like but fe if the car cost insurance tax cost 4k that would leave you with 1k left over. Surly you would be tempted to squander that money or spend it on cars mods rather than repairs

also try and take the loan out over as short a period as you can afford.
My mother is an accountant and always says that. She never understands when family come around with new cars and say they got a 5 year loan on it. Chances are your not going to keep the car for 5 years. I'm not saying you will take out a 5 year loan just more of a general statement.

Sound, I reckon 2/3 years would be good for me, I have a decent permanent job so shouldn't be too bad. The reason I'm looking for a loan is I'd rather the car sooner rather than later and the (reasonably) right car has popped up, pending inspection

I would always go for a loan for a car rather than use my savings but max two years so interest isn't too bad. For me I rather keep my savings for a rainy day. I agree not to use a loan for insurance and tax though. If you have to use direct debit to make the insurance easier and tax by the quarter, that's always an option.

Anybody wanna take a stab at what these buttons are for. There in a 1998 pajero. Don't seem to do much, from what I've noticed, but then again, I don't drive it too often. Have no manual and t'internet isn't throwing up anything...

This one looks like the check engine light that appears on the dash. (It's hidden away - the passenger side of the centre armrest)

When this button is changed position it changes the position of the green light on the dash (the little pic looks like a hydraulic ram or something) Haven't a clue what the one on the right is

Probably simple things, but if you don't ask you'll never learn!

Depends how you plan to pay for tax and insurance. A credit union loan makes sense for insurance if you're paying the insurance by direct debit where it's something like 20+ %.
Likewise it normally works out cheaper to borrow from the credit union for the car tax and pay it back over the year, than pay the tax every 6/3 months.

If you're paying the full year insurance up front and likewise the full years tax, then it doesn't make as much sense to go down the loan route, but if you're paying insurance monthly then a credit union loan makes financial sense....as you're saving money.

Seeing as we're both around the same age, in college and so on, I would avoid a loan like the plague, I'd rather make the money myself and spend my savings then that way you don't need to repay back a loan while maintaining the car, what if something goes on it? then you need to spend money on the part/labour, while keeping money aside for the loan and so on

The only reason I have my car is because i worked my ass off during christmas to afford it, and coupled with that a very very tight budget, that's the only way i can afford to run it
