Smoking near kids in beer garden

Is this socially acceptable? Yesterday I was having after-work drinks and food in a really sunny beer garden with some work friends - around half 7 in the evening. A family with small children came out and sat next to us, then requested that we stop smoking whilst they were there with their kids. In an outdoor beer garden. We agreed to do it, but it was pretty clear we weren't happy about it. Do you think they were right to request that we not smoke and we were right to make our feelings clear? Id' never smoke near a child at a bus stop/ street area but surely a beer garden at 7pm is fair game?

Also not really very practical advice, if your quitting don't go outside! You have no choice

every beer garden is a smoking area. And in my opinion, everybody should be accommodated

I would say the vast majority of people avoid smoking around children, you're very wide of the point here. The OP stopped smoking when asked to, the sense of entitlement seems to have been all on the side of the parents of the kids.

Have never smoked, and hate 2nd hand smoke.
But smokers should be allowed to smoke wherever they like once it complies with the law.

Non smoker here with an entire non smoking family. For Jesus sake, where are smokers supposed to go if they want to have a drink and of course have a fag? They've already been kicked outside because of the smoking ban and they are complying to it. If you don't want your kids exposed to smoke where people are CLEARLY going to smoke then stay inside where there is no smoke if you're that concerned. I've no problem with kids being in pubs either, granted the parents aren't getting hammered and letting their kids run amok, but if they don't like it leave their kids at home.

Because outdoors hasn't yet been regulated. Smokers can smoke, legally, if they want.

I've a son, sometimes we take him to the local for a Friday/Sunday evening dinner. To us, it's a reataurant. He loves the food, we enjoy ourselves. We go early, we leave early, cos it's also a pub and really I don't want to see drunks and they don't want to see kids.

If people accepted that there is no one place for everyone to be it would be great.

Some places are for kids, some places are family friendly, til a certain time, some places are aimed at drinking adults. That is life.

It's entirely up to the parents to protect their children from cigarette smoke and they should do so by completely avoiding areas where they know people will be smoking. I am hugely anti smoking btw but until such time as Ireland is tobacco free, the duty is on those parents to keep kids away from the smoke and not the smoke away from the kids, if that makes sense?

What about children attending an event in a pub/hotel and want to be outside? I was just wondering the opinion on this? I don't agree with the parents telling you to stop at all,and I don't ever socially take my child to the pub. But at an event my child could be out side on a nice day with us (albeit not at 7pm) is this wrong?

I hate smoking my dad died at 53 from lung cancer, but children have no place in a pub end of story. I hate people smoking in pub doorways as well. I generally find smokers selfish to be honest, you can't enjoy a meal of a drink outside a pub or a cafe on a nice day as you will be choked with smoke.
I know we have smokers rights ect, but if you want to damage your health thats ok but don't damage mine.I work with 2 smokers who really want to give them up but can't, I understand it is a terrible addiction but thats not my fault.
Smoking should be banned at tables outside serving food.
Don't get me started on e cigs inside.

I don't. Had similar happen to me about a year or so after the smoking ban came in(only this was minus kids). A few hollow chested holier than thou types including a bint with the faux cough for effect. One of the tools actually used the word "rights". That was enough for me. I would imagine they would coexist peacefully. I haven't see people smoking cigarettes get annoyed at anyone lighting up a pipe or a cigar.

but, more people have STOPPED smoking real cigs and eventually e cig , by using e cigs to wean themselves of the dreaded nicotine, i know loads of people who have given up real and e cigs , becasue of e cig use,
and becasue of all the knee jerk , un educated reactions to people using e cigs , we will get the stupid politicians banning the e cigs to try win a few votes , becasue a vocal MINORITY are banging on about their use ,
so the result will be MORE people unfortunately ending up like your father becasue they were not given the chance to quit , becasue the proven , working cessation aide has been banned by idiots .

Maybe , maybe not. a Pipe and cigar would be seen as "socially acceptable". Not considered by most, as doing drugs.
