UPC modem/router Technicolor TC7200

Just upgraded broadband and got sent new modem/router to replace my epc2203 modem.
Was expecting an epc3925 but got a Technicolor TC7200.U
Looks like a new Thompson?
Anyone got one, how good are they?
Cannot find any option to use bridging mode so will have to setup as normal modem/router and change my main router to be a switch/ap unless I can recable.

Working okay here
Origionally used the snmp method to bridge tc7200 a few months ago
Using ASUS RT16 with Merlin Firmware as router
Exam time in house so will know quick enough if wan connection dropping

Is there any cable modems available that can be used on upc's 200m/bit connection ?

Ones Ive found have support a maximum of 50mbit really.

Just want to get this so called router out of my networking environment tbh

You can't replace the cable modem. UPC don't allow third party modems on their system for residential users.

I believe they used to supply Cisco router/modems, seen if you request one they would charge 45 euro, but are those compatible with the 200mbit line ?

The EPC3925 is, none of the earlier versions are.

You will also have to convince UPC to provision any router you may buy from elsewhere

It won't just work at your location. Some have had this done where others have been refused point blank by UPC.

Just an updated on this rdosemyfeet - I've had bridging working perfectly for over a day now (as opposed to 5 minutes). Using snmpset instead of the web UI switcher seemed to make the difference. I'd say it's worth giving a shot.

Can anyone help with these two problems:

1. It seems configuration backup/restore never worked on my TC7200.
2. I cant reset WIFI security back to WEP after a factory restore.

I had broadband problems yesterday. My speed was so slow web pages timed out while loading. I phoned UPC but they were not able to fix the problem. Then at 9pm, my broadband miraculously came back to life. However, while trouble shooting the problem earlier with UPC, they got me to restore factory settings. So I lost my wifi custom settings. I tried to restore them from two backup configuration files but neither worked. So I decided to test configuration backup/restore. I found that restore does not work on my TC7200.

I manually changed my wifi settings back to what they were before factory settings were restored, with one exception. I could not set wifi security back to WEP. I had it set to WEP because I have a mobile phone thats needs to connect using WEP.

Has anyone any suggestions?

Yep, thats how I set WEP before, about a year ago. But now, after the factory restore, I cant get WEP to show in the drop-down box.

Maybe that method of setting WEP is not working due to some firmware download from UPC.

I have only seen 1 firmware upgrade since these boxes where shipped, and that only happened in the last 2months, so it's possible that the WEP option has been removed or moved to another not-so-obvious menu option.
Only suggestion I can make is to post a question in the UPC forum, or ring them up (if you have the time of course).

I had to diagnose a problem with one of these recently and it turned out it was bridge mode that was the problem (had been previously enabled via the hidden bridge mode page).

Connection was dropping once or twice a day which eventually turned into dropping every 10 minutes (modem signal lights and SNR/power levels were all fine). I switched it back to router mode (again via the hidden page, SNMP doesn't seem to be enabled anymore) and used the DMZ method instead and it was back working fine.

Just letting ye know in case you run into similar troubles. It might be a problem with this particular modem but I'd say its more of a firmware issue.

P.S. the ping/traceroute diagnostic tools on the modem page always seem to give request timed out regardless of connectivity status.

Regarding TC7200 WEP and Configuration Backup/restore problems:

I contacted UPC and informed them of the TC7200 configuration restore problem. The support person I spoke to said he had no training in that area, and he didnt appear interested in any way. Hmm, I was only trying to be helpful by informing them of a TC7200 problem. I will say no more.

With regard to WEP:
UPC download an "upgrade" to all TC7200 modems not too long ago. It appears to prevent the round-about way of selecting the wifi security WEP option. However it does not disable operation of WEP if it was already enabled prior to the so called "upgrade".
If however factory settings are restored, then WEP will be deselected and can never be reselected again.

Thank you UPC for dictating and further restricting your customer's options.

Hey all, so I have a Technicolor TC7200. Have it a few months now. First thing I have had issues was my DLNA media server called Universal Media Server from my laptop on the network. I found that I need WMM on the wireless to be turned off. So that fixed that.

My current issue is that XBOX live disconnects for host based games of such. I get disconnected from MW3 and I can't play GTA 5 online without straight away getting disconnected from the game and often XBOX live.

I know that the issue is the router in the TC7200 because I set up bridge mode and had no problems then but the issue with bridge is the drop in internet connection as some others have had on here.

Also using the diagnostic ping on the TC7200 is always bringing back request timed out over and over for each device I have on the network.

I would really REALLY appreciate some advice or to know others are having these issues. Rang up UPC so many times and they show that no internet issues are occurring, which is true, but when I tell them I know it is a router issue they tell me they don't support that.

What kind of pattern/frequency of connection drops do you get when you bridge?

It can vary, could be a few hours often. Although with one router I tried it was a few hours with another it was much more frequent

Interesting that the EPC3925 bridged drops the connection on the regular basis too.

I noticed as well that I get a different external IP address when I use bridge mode

Maybe not be all tc7200's fault, could be a mixture of connection and router causing issues!
My tc7200 has been bridged for 3 months now and is rock solid.
Never had to reboot it or anything like that.
Have lost my connection once or twice in that time, but that was a general network fault.
Unfortunately don't game so cannot comment on xbox issues.
Use linux satellite stb's and nfs (don't use dlna at all) to record/share media locally, no problems either.

@Karsini you Sir are one of few I have read that has success for a long period of time with bridge mode on these boxes, it looks like I am going to have to try it out myself as I am having problems with this Technicrap box.

I am having problems on XBL, Last I did was gave the xbox a static IP and put into the dmz which helped but did not solve my random disconnecting, being kicked from lobbies or I cannot play with certain people and I am getting kicked from the game seesion. I checked the NAT again and it was open. I am not suffering from any other issues on any other device. This has only started since my new Technicrap box came.

One would think that since I went from 30mb (Cisco EPC2425) broadband to 120mb broadband the quality of service would go up not down but it would not be UPC if that happened I suppose, the love/hate relationship does not look like ending soon either as they do offer the best broadband even with this Technicrap box.

Love fast broadband
Hate UPC service overall.

Have you tried put the xbox in DMZ with a static IP on the xbox,
It helped me a somewhat but I still suffer disconnecting and lobby kicking but you never know it might just work for you.

Other than that you could try a box that someone here is using for months (karsini with AVM Fritz Box 7390) and is working fine for months, just to be sure it's not something external or it just does not like talking to certain boxes.

I Plan on doing this anyway just so I know it works ok because if it works for Karsini I should be able to get it working too theoretically speaking.

Just be aware that AVM routers aren't cheap! They're not readily available in Ireland either now, because their Irish distributor went out of business.
