Local Elections 2014: What issues will you be raising with candidates on the door?

The local elections are coming up on May 23rd. So with that in mind, what are the Dublin 15 issues important to you and that you would like to see the candidates address? Over the course of the campaign Boards is going to try to engage with local election candidates and run Q&A sessions with them, so this is your first chance to tell them what you'll be asking them should they call to your door.

Obviously there's potential for this thread to become contentious, so a couple of ground rules:

NO politician bashing - this isn't about slagging off X candidate or Y party, it's about getting proper discussion going on what issues face Dublin 15 and what the candidates can expect to be grilled on.

NO politicians - feel free to keep an eye on this thread, but you'll get your chance later. This thread is for your potential future constituents only.

Political affiliations - if you're going to be involved in campaigning for a candidate or in the organisation of any party/group's campaign, you must declare this in your first post in this thread.

One of the posters on Mountview Road is a public meeting poster. The other one is an election poster. There are a few of them. I don't know who they're for or what party they're for but it's a man.

The socialists are particularly fond of littering the place with posters for public meetings of all sorts. They're usually stuck on to the back of posters for previous stuff so when they leave them up for ages and it invariably rains they become a mess and unsightly.

This year I'm genuinely going to take note of local ones with an eye to reporting them to the litter warden if they're up early, or left up too long.

Agree on that, the issue is that everything has to agree on it for it to work. Once one person does something, the rest usually do.

Here's a random question. Do you feel Social media might be more powerful than postering?

Social media I dont think is to be honest.
My parents for example would never be online. Both in their late 50's.
I am sure there are many like that.

I don't follow any politicians on FB or Twitter.Except one who is also a personal friend so its different.

What you say is very true. The people who vote in greatest numbers are people 50 and over.

Those same people are not as regular on social media, but they read every leaflet and the newspapers.

Had another look at the posters and the one I thought was an election poster seems to be a very sneaky public meeting poster. I say seems to be because it's actually very difficult to see the small writing down the bottom. If you were just driving by you'd think it was a regular election poster. McManus is the guy's name. Fianna Fáil I think.

The ones I've seen are election posters but with some very flimsy add for a meeting placed over it, you can see right through them. Kieran Dennison is one I've seen and a female candidate whose posters are at the Whitestown side of the centre.

Littlepace on the 26th of April apparently, according to his FB page... bit rich of his brother to be on claiming about others bogus public meetings when David is doing the exact same thing.

Tomorrow week in the Paddocks, clonee. Organised and booked two weeks ago and only advertised tonight.

Advertised also on social media (facebook and twitter).

The ones i mentioned earlier are up TWO weeks ago, the date of their meetings have passed and they're still up.

In addition to that, there are bogus public meetings called every six months by some candidates/parties, as a way to get their face and name on a poll and keep themselves relevant - but you never ever see a photo of the event and the crowd because the meeting never kicked off.

Just to add one more thing; the public notices are limited to about 70 constituency wide. Take a look in Corduff tomorrow, one party has about 100 alone in corduff. Advertising the public meeting one week in advance is reasonable.

All the 'notices' for meetings seem to be A4 pages stuck to election posters though. I'm sure it's to bag prime lampposts and they'll just come around and pull the bit of paper off and hey presto, there's an election poster,

One of the ones I saw was definitely printed on the poster. The notice was so small though that I'm sure they'll just stay up with an out of date notice.

I really think it's taking the absolute piss putting them up early under the guide of advertising a meeting. I don't care about the whole 'if everyone else is doing it I have to do it too' excuse. I'd have a hell of a lot more respect for someone ago decided not to litter the area early.

A3 in this case.

By the way, the 70/75 is limited also by the litter laws. Very important to stay within that.

Just for the record, I'm a member of the SF group in college, but I'm not doing anything about the elections at home.

I'm in Blanchardstown, and we've had Eithne Loftus and Jack Chambers to the door so far. Kind of hilarious seeing my dad having a go at Loftus and FG over the charges.

I'll be bringing up the lack of amenities for the local football club (Said it to Jack Chambers that Castleknock Football Club had nothing, he started going on about the CHFC, to which I replied "No, the soccer club."), and general lack of amenities this side of the Diswellstown bridge for sports. There's no council all weather pitches, no council amenities for any sort of sports.

One is for Fianna Fail and another is for Sinn Fein. Both Sinn Fein candidates have supported local events and have been active in the area cant say much about the others apart from David Mcguiness up in the Corduff area.
One of the Sinn Fein posters have a public meeting leaflet stuck on them.

There's a David McGuinness poster up just at the roundabout in Mulhuddart beside the community centre and it has no public meeting sign on it. There's one or two Kieran Dennison posters up on the same stretch of road (Ladyswell Road) with public meeting signs on them.

When is the date from when they can put up the posters? Coppinger and the anti austerity alliance have littered the place this weekend with low hanging posters, a complete eyesore and that's just one set so far.

To be fair, they all have. It's a bloody disgrace that Fingal Council let their councillors and prospective councillors litter the place so far in advance of the election. And I'm not buying that crap about the public meetings either. I've seen plenty of posters where the detachable public meeting notice has already come off, presumably due to rain. The biggest offenders I've noticed for this so far have been David McGuinness and some Sinn Fein candidate, but they're not the only ones. If you're going to circumvent the law so blatantly, at least have enough cop on to ensure your stickers are weatherproof.

All the new ones I saw today were blatant electioneering, no pretence of public meetings or any such notice, but they were literally on every lamppost, no attempts at trying to be discrete or anything.

AFAIK tomorrow is the first legal day. Mary Fitzpatrick election posters (not the public meeting ones) have been all over the city since Friday.
