I also believe a male being assaulted with a dildo anally would be rape by definition, but not a crime under Irish law.

Two other points, a man doesn't need to be erect for intercourse and if a man was forced to do the work at knifepoint or gunpoint by definition it would be rape by definition but by law it would not be.

I would consider any direct sexual act without consent rape, regardless of what the law says.

The definition of rape is one of the most appallingly badly written laws there is. Rape should mean intercourse of any kind where any party does not consent, end of story. Penetration is irrelevant - if you're being made to have sex that you haven't consented to, you're being raped.

In that context, a man or a woman can rape a man or a woman - if any of them don't consent.

Surely in the example you give there is assault, sexual assault and possibly wounding involved - all covered by statute.

I'm of the opinion (and people will disagree) that a woman can rape a man if she drugs him and has sex with him or threatens him physically with a weapon and has sex with him or if she penetrates him with an object or a strap on. In other circumstances, I don't think it is rape.

It's absolutely shocking and shameful that legally a woman cannot rape a man. Of course a woman can rape a man. Any forces or non consensual sexual act is rape. All other arguments to the contrary are null and void in my opinion.

An erection doesn't necessarily require some form of arousal, it can be a physical response to stimulus.

Rape in history was only a crime committed against women in fact until recently rape was in fact a crime against the man who owned the women hence why in many countries a husband could not rape his wife.

While legally a man in Ireland can not be raped by a women, he can of course be sexually assaulted by a women.

Does this statement of the law make Ireland a backwater no it just how the irish legal system have defined certain actions, in a certain legal context. There are good arguments why rape is only against women, or in fact rape under section 4 could be male on male or in fact female on female but not for some reason female on male. There of of course many good arguments that the law should reflect the reality than a women could in fact rape a man.

A women in such situation would be charged with sexual assault. It is safe to say that Ireland's law on sex is woefully inadequate, with many many serious issues. A perfect example if a 16 year old boy has sex with his 16 year old girlfriend in which the both agree he commits an offence in Irish law while she does not, even if he is 15 and she is 16 he still commits the offence.
