TUS Programme

I got wind of a placement coming up in my area that would suit me and one that I reckon I'll enjoy doing prior to my interview last Tuesday and mentioned it to them. They more or less told me that if I'm one of the people chosen to take up what I think are around 7 available placements in my area that they'll fix me up with that one.

You're a nailed on cert I'd guess. People proactively suggesting placements as a preference are not all that common. If it was me, I'd be giving it to you

No not so far but I have been unemployed long term and don't have much work experience so I am expecting to be called.
I'm open to the idea of trying it out but I wouldn't really be into some jobs I heard that are on offer.
Like working with the elderly or children so I was wondering what there is to pick from?

They crowd that interviewed me seemed to focus a good bit on what my interests were and what sort of jobs I'd like to do etc. I'd have my doubts that if you told them that you were interested in working with the elderly and children that they'd put you out sweeping the streets or mowing hurling pitches. Stressing to them that if it was possible at all to not put you on one of them placements you wouldn't like you'd appreciate it greatly, would do you no harm wither I'd say. I told them that if I got a placement with hours that would suit me (I've a child with a disability and needs 24 hour round the clock care) that I'd have no problem in working 100 hours a week for them and they were very understanding. Told me not to worry that if I was going to be one of the ones chosen from the days interviews that they would do their best to sort me out with a placement that wouldn't make things tougher than they already are for me at home.

As a participant on this scheme I will agree. I got my placement in an area I requested and I enjoy working instead of sitting around all day doing nothing, but for 20 euro extra per week the work load is ridiculous. The person I work for takes advantage and regularly states that I must get as much as possible done before my placement ends. The supervisors are sound but they are overworked too, although their payslip would put mine to shame.
If this scheme was run properly with proper checks carried on participants it would be better but as it stands its just a way to force people into work that nobody would do otherwise.
1 example, cleaning out a dogs shed covered in wet sh*t and been laughed at wen I requested gloves.

You have the same rights on these schemes as you have with any job. If you are being abused, speak up and refuse to take it. Have you joined the Union? If not, go to one and they will help you. If your supervisors are as god as you say, they will lok out for you. If not, go to whichever TUS/FAS person that put you forward for the placement and (pardon the pun) take NO sh1t from them.

We don't force anyone to take up a placement. Don't need to. Plenty of the referred folk actually want to do something, in most cases for their sanity, to get some routine back in their life, to not have to queue every Monday morning at the post office, etc; and we do our absolute best to accomodate them in an area of their choice.

Gateway and Tus are two completely different schemes
They should not be compared.

Tus offers choice, meaningful employment opportunities, also the experience gained by younger folk is very helpful for future career options. A participant is asked to do 19.5 hrs per week in various partitions (which suits both the participant and community group). A participant receives close to €11 per hour for a single person ie. €208 per week and it goes up depending on circumstances not down, and does not lose any of their benefits
A supervisor receives a similar amount in relation to hrs worked, and does lose all benefits in respect.

Just started a Tus programme this week. Enjoying what I'm doing. Got paid last week through bank a/c. Just wondering is it a set day every week in which the payments are made?
Last week the money was lodged on Thursday but this week haven't received it yet.

Yes, Thursday morning regularly. There have been some issues with certain banks processing the payroll transfers which has caused some delays but your money will be there today, for sure;)

Dunno where your information comes from in this respect Dnaan, but it's incorrect.

@dodzy, are the supervisor positions open to everyone or just former TUS participants. Also would you know how to apply or even where there advertised. I have asked our supervisors but I just keep getting brushed off.
I previously asked were you a supervisor and it was only to get info about TUS supervisor positions, if you cant provide info for any reason then its no problem.

Conscious of the charter here Corsav but I'm confident that I'm not overstepping any mark.

It was the case whereby Tus Team Leaders were selected from the actual participants but that was changed in June 2013 which opened the door for anyone to apply.

Best location for advertisements: Activelink ( and obviously the individual Partnership websites themselves )

Thanks a million for that, you would be surprised how hard it is to get any info on supervisor roles.
I really don't want to sign back on when I'm finished and employment in mayo is very hard come by so I'm hoping to apply for a supervisor job.
I read the forum rules after the mod warning previous and I don't think we're breaking any rules, but as I asked you for info I take full responsibility if we did break any.

Hi TBP, it would appear that the job is there so really just depends on the following:

Is it an existing position that is currently filled and is about to become vacant due to a person completing their 12mths or leaving the position for whatever reason?

Are they forward planning to backfill positions in weeks/months ?

Every programme has a quota and we are instructed not to exceed that number so how do they stand in regard to placed numbers vs target ?

Is it possible that more people have requested the same position ? Unusual, granted, but not impossible ?

Eitherway, you should be fine. I will give you an example of the timeframe assuming the position is vacant:

You come in for interview. You mention a position that you are interested in. I set up a meeting with the host org. You meet them. Both parties are happy to proceed. I set up your payroll and get you off SW payment. Typically, this could be done in 2 weeks. That would be the quickest possible turnaround realistically.

No harm in giving them a call. Let us know how you get on.

This is the sitiuation,

Got letter for interview and almost immediately found out that a particular place in my area are looking to take on 3 people via this scheme. I went and spoke to the guy running this place and he confirmed that they were and have been for over 3 months now he then told me that the TUS supervisor was into him the day before and promised him he'd have 3 lads within a week or two as he was interviewing people within 2 weeks. Anyways the interviews were held nearly 2 weeks ago and from what I could gather 40 people were interviewed, you know how mine went but as of yet I've heard nothing. I'm beginning to think now that me being so eager to get on this scheme might haven given the interviewers the impression that I was genuinely looking for work or not a dosser like a few that were there that day (some made out they couldn't read, write, drive and pulled all sorts of stuff trying to make themselves unavailable or not fit for work) and chose the latter instead. Do you think that might be possible.
