Money taken from bank account. Pretty sure my card wasn't skimmed. How?

How can this happen? I noticed some fairly big payments that I didn't make going out of my bank account to software and web hosting companies . Reported it as soon as I saw it to my bank (very helpful) and it is being dealt with.

I can't wrap my head around how it was done. I rarely use the card as it is not my main bank account. The last time I used an atm with it was weeks ago and I always check atms before I use them. I never use the card in shops etc.

Basically all I use the account for is to pay for stuff online. Via ebay/paypal mostly, and the odd direct transfer.

Can anyone tell me how this was done? i'm puzzled.

Your online account or paypal account may have been hacked. Change all passwords and security questions for any account associated with your bank cards/accounts.

Was "op" in the narrative? Originator plus, basically they can do direct debit without your approval. I had it come up on a work bank account, if it is that your bank can rectify in a day.

No, nothing like that. All were POS.

Your card can be compromised via the websites you purchase from. Either via an employee or their database. Sometimes when a card is compromised nothing happens with it for weeks/months and they it's used. Sometimes there are bin attacks where the software they use bang in numbers in order till they get the goods and finally sometimes there's no indicators, **** just happens. There's a good chance your bank will know what the compromise is as often multiple cards get hit, they run analytics and they'll find a merchant all the compromised cards will have used however they won't tell you that (only because they can't be bad mouthing companies).

Long story somewhat shorter, you'll get your money back and as long as you don't use your card on obscure weird sites regularly it's unlikely to happen again.

POS: Point of Sale means in a shop physically using a card. Usually a nice place to have your card details stolen especially when on holiday overseas. When I finally go to Thailand I shall bring only cash and never use my card

Also, dunno about Ireland but here in Australia you can pay for taxi rides using debit/credit cards. They're another awesome compromise point. One of the tricks they use is to use what they call a ghost terminal ie they take your card, pop it into a normal looking machine and out comes a receipt but they don't actually charge the card, just skim it. Weeks later the card gets used and it's very hard to spot it because often you don't remember a random taxi you took and for us antifraudies as no transaction ever happened in the first place you can't spot compromise points.

Same thing happened to me. Looked at my statement one day and there was a huge payment to some company.

The bank were very helpful. Filled out a form saying what happened. Got my money back a few days later.

They said they'd investigate but I never did hear from them again. Just glad to havey my money back to be honest. Been a lot more careful since.

yea , and how many times have you seen people in a restaurant hand their card for payment ?

off pops the waiter/waitress to the till , under the till they have a cloning device , they then bring you a wireless POS device , a dodgy one , that records your pin number , and there you go !!

its all very easy really , all you need is a business with criminal staff or owners

In all seriousness it's really sh*tty when stuff like this happens. My OH had a credit card that he only used for paypal and had never used it in a shop. The company that issued the card gave notice that they were pulling out of Ireland in the next few months. A disgruntled employee stole customers details one of which was my OH...we're not sure if they sold the information or used it between themselves and friends. They booked flights, ordered and payed for meals on justeat along with other things.

The credit card company tried to dispute that his card had been comprised. We were able to log into the ryanair passenger details using the credit card number and get the name of the person who booked the flight. We printed all the information off and sent it to the credit card company. Eventually they sorted it out. It was a nightmare for a few months though.
