I was just chatting to the lad in the toll booth on the M6 near ballinasloe and he reckoned that the TC down there have a black unmarked i40 estate. I didn't see it, hope it didn't see me either...

Lads, anyone have any idea how many of those 07 mondeos were bought by the garda? The amount of them used is unreal.. Gardai must be their biggest customer.

A lot thee was job lot both when they change the shape they got very good deal

To add if these weren't purchased in 06/07 then cars would even be more if possible resource issue.lots of these cars are on the last legs currently

The reason there are so many is that more than usual were bought. Someone decided there was a surplus of funds and best to "use it or lose it". It was well documented in the media at the time. The majority remained parked up on the square in GHQ until late 2008, even 2009 for some.

However it is safe to say that most of these are now overdue for replacement, whether marked or not.

Well most are 7 years old by now. Must be near the milage limit. They would have been better off with a proper selection of the focus. Mondeo. Fiesta and maybe even a few more transits.

Transit Vans 07/08 go to 500,000 so there be around for bit

I would imagine that any time there is a change of shape on a vehicle eg a new Ford Mondeo, Toyota Avensis, that there will be a surplus of vehicles and hence anyone buying a large amount would be getting a very good deal.

Recently, Ford launched a new shape Ford Kuga jeep (in 2013), just before that in 2012, a massive amount of new Ford Kuga vans were launched & they amount of firms that have them in use is staggering, think lots of fleet companies bought them. I think this vans were just passenger models with the back seats removed but not sure of this. By the by, a lovely motor to drive.

Another reason they bought so many was that model Mondeo, especially in 2.0 petrol, was one of the best patrol car on the road, better than anything that's come since.

Also consider the small streets in city centre, tight parking spaces in areas like Store Street & Pearse Street, much easier to get a fiesta around those areas than a mondeo. Also, Fiesta's would be good for surveillance duties.

I heard that the guards also use things like fiesta and focus vans. Would make sense, you'd never spot them..

I'v seen a good few unmarked 2002- 2004 focus's recently.

Id rather see the best car for the job. Selection means nothing. The Mondeo was the best car for the job. The main problem with the new one is the engine choice is too small, 1.6 diesel is useless as the new Focus patrol car, can only imagine it in a Mondeo. The job has switched to diesels for cost cutting reasons but the sooner they revert to petrol patrol cars the better.

I don't think they'll ever go back to petrol in a big way. I think they'll probably have electric before petrol

You don't think Green is the future? Billions of dollars aren't being spent on researching and testing Diesel engines, they're being spent on getting a car to run a battery that you pay to charge, and charge fast.

It'll be a while before all-electric vehicles are suitable for emergency services use. I suspect that the charge time would be a killer issue. Charging fast while not damaging the service life is a difficult trade-off to make.

I reckon you'll see all-electric buses first, since they have more predictable hours & miles on the road and they have nightly downtime windows that allow for a full charge. When there are sizeable fleets of heavy-use vehicles knocking around then it'll be easier for the various emergency services to consider switching to electric vehicles.

Long term, one way or another, big fleets will have to switch from fossil fuels since the cost of fuel is only going one way. It's a matter of "when", not "if".

Would the issue with the lack of engine choice be what Ford in Ireland are willing to sell - or what Garda Mgt are willing to spec I wonder.

For example - you can buy a Focus estate in the Uk with a 2.0 163 ps - and I think a 180 ps 1.6 turbo petrol.

You also used to be able to buy a 2.0 240 ps ecoboost turbo petrol in the Mondeo in the Uk - but im not sure if they still offer that option with the Mondeo now winding down with the current model due to be replaced.

Unfortunately - manufacturers in general don't like selling petrols in Ireland anymore due to lack of demand.

Of course if proper police spec cars were purchased from word go - you should be able to have any engine you like - regardless of the normal irish model range - because a police spec car should be special order right

Steam / electric / petrols were out in the 1800's, Diesel came along in the 1900's. IMO a petrol seems to be the better in terms of overall ease of maintainence (tho' turbos/superchargers complicate matters somewhat ).
No doubt the Garage will have all the facts/figures before them before making decisions based on i)Cost ii) Operational need for speed

you'd have a hard time spotting that i30. Interior is a bit bland but other than that it's a nice looking yoke.

Indeed it is hard to spot, I must remember 141 D i30........maybe Garda car. I imagine quite a few will not be recognised by traffic wardens as well and will get parking tickets. I trust they have the reg plate surrond and Insurance disc sorted.

About time too, I was surprised when those bumper l.e.d.s appeared on unmarked vehicles a few years ago.

The dash light is probably just on suction cups. Same as the unmarked Avensis.
