Say the words aloud. Unless you have a unique way of pronouncing one or the other, they don't rhyme. Here is a definition of what a rhyme is: "identity in sound of some part, especially the end, of words or lines of verse."

The key part here is the word 'sound'. Just because a word is spelt similarly to another word doesn't mean that it rhymes with it. I hope this helps.

I'd say you are very much in the minority if the way you speak makes these two words rhyme but each to their own. I'm not saying you're wrong, I'm all for including minorities in these games.

Check out a character called Ivor from 'Damo and Ivor'. There are videos on You Tube. He's another whose accent might make those two words rhyme. What part of the USA are you from? I just never heard those two particular words rhymed together.

Sorry if we're derailing this thread! I was brought up in Chicago, but have lived in Galway for decades (since I was a pre-teen). Also lived in California for a while as an adult. I've never heard port and short not rhyme! I just don't get it. I even went on a website (http://www.forvo.com/) and genuinely couldn't hear much difference between US, UK, Irish, Canadian, etc. (apart from the rhotic/non-rhotic thing, and even with that, they pronounced both the same).

Not trying to be confrontational, seriously. I find this stuff fascinating.

Off ALL the questionable rhyming pairs that have ever appeared on this thread (and there have been many) I can't believe the only one I've ever seen questioned is 'port' and 'short'

After repeating aloud in a number of different accents (each more ridiculous than the last) I still think they rhyme??! Or close enough anyway. I also think that I'm losing my mind.
