hi all , I was just wondering if your first year counts towards your over all degree in any way? is it enough to just pass your first year exams ? thanks

Not usually in Trinity. It is highly recommendable to do your best in all exams though, as your results will appear on your transcript, a document that you will normally have to show potential employers, either during your studies or once you graduate. Eventually experience becomes more important but a good transcript is desirable.

When in doubt about these things, check your course handbook - they explain these things.

It usually doesn't count. That said, there aren't many people who scrape a pass in first year and go on to get a good mark in their degree overall.

Unless something in your life is making it very hard to be present, you should absolutely make the most of this experience. It is only 4 years and you're highly unlikely to ever get a chance like it again. If you don't like your course, think again, but if you do, work hard, learn a lot and gain the respect of your classmates and lecturers. The whole four years will be much better for it, whereas if you get into bad habits now you'll be bored stiff and waiting for it to end by fourth year.

Unsurprisingly, first year is the easiest academic year you'll have in college.

What would happen if you also did poorly in SF? By JS you might want a summer placement and even with the best of grades those can be hard to find.

You'd be foolish not to try do well while you have the chance.

Depends on the course. Only 3rd and 4th year counted for me in TSM, but one of my friends did Pharmacy and all 4 years counted for her (not all equally, though, obviously the final years were a lot more important).

It is very hard to pick things up in 2nd year if you've barely scraped by in 1st year though, so don't write it off as a year to doss even if it doesn't count in your course.

Nope, only second year results count for choosing the moderatorship. Third year in most of the moderatorships counts towards the final degree result, but other than that the two freshman years don't count at all.
