Why can't you donate blood?

That sounds a bit accusatory! I don't mean it like that but I recently found out that I can't donate blood because I lived the North in the 80's and my OH also can't because he had jaundice as a baby.

So, anyone else here not allowed to give blood?

I always try and donate, didn't last year though due to work, couldn't get away to.

But I hate the snobbery from some that donate against those who choose not too. At the end of the day it's a personal choice like.

I feel like I should with me being O neg too, super blood! :P

I was born in the UK, moved home to the border when I was 5 months old, at that time everyone here did their shopping in British supermarkets, consuming British meat, it was just the way it was. Went to college in the UK, worked in the UK, socialised in the UK, go to the dentist in the UK.

And I'm not excluded from giving blood. I give four times a year.

I cant because i was recently in a malaria zone. Ive to wait 12 months I think. Only found out when a few of us went to do it this year. It was always something very important to my grandfather who gave countless times so I want to continue this. Will be starting to donate as soon as the 12 months is up

Good for you, but where do you give blood? North or south of the border or in England?
If in the Republic, and you haven't actually lived in the UK during the specific years then technically they can't stop you donating.

I couldn't until about a year ago but now I'm comfortably over the weight. I tried in D'Olier street and passed the questioning but then mentioned I have previously been on iron supplements...although iron level is fine now. 'Come back in 6 months'

They also weren't thrilled that I put down on the form that I have fainted in the past, though not in the last 10 years. Will try again next month!

I'm Gay, but I also have a bleeding disorder, and that was the first reason they gave me for not being allowed donate... Mind you, I get frequent platelet transfusions, so I bow to all who do donate! Thank You!!

To make up for it, I am donating my brain after I die!

Yeah, I donate in Ireland, because I wouldn't have accumulated 365 nights in the UK between 1980 and 1996, (a year either side and I'd be way over) even though I would have consumed British food products seven days a week. Even someone in Dublin who was never even in Newry could have consumed plenty of contaminated burgers in their lifetime, so the restriction is a silly really.

Not only did I live in the UK during some of the years 1980 -1996, but I also received a blood transfusion when I lived there (6 pints) so I'm ruled out on the double.

But without that transfusion I wouldn't be here today.

So obviously I would encourage anyone who can, to please donate some of theirs. You are genuine life savers.

you beat me to it Stinkle - I was reading down to the end of the thread to say that haemochromatosis is no longer banned. I'm on 41 donations myself. I used to only go the odd time with OH but when he got banned (epilepsy) I stepped up my donations a bit.

Yeah its v recent. My dad is a super donor but his iron was all over the place lately and he was sent away when it was too low. Then it was vv high and haemochromatosis was suspected which isd how we know about this new rule. He still can't donate for a year

I've been sent away for low iron on one occasion but it was only a tiny bit below their limit so not anaemic. I go to the us regularly enough and can't donate for a month after that so sometimes means I can't donate as often as I'd like.

I used to donate regularly but then I got really run down and was on B12 injections for a year or so, so I wasn't allowed while I was getting those. Now I'm on meds for the next two months. If they sort me out I'll be able to donate again, but if I've to go on a longer course then I'll have to wait until I'm done.

Limerick. This was about a year ago now but I actually remember her saying something that they were changing it so hopefully it will happen.
