They used to be open the same as pub hours.

If I recall correctly the official reason for closing them at 10pm was to combat underage drinking. Everyone knows that underage drinkers only rise from slumber at 10pm, so the government decided to cut them off at the pass.

Thankfully, since then underage drinking has been eradicated.

Because if they didn't close at 10 we'd drink too much. My local off license is only open for 9 hours. THANK GOD. I don't want to lose my job, wife, children and other stuff that is valuable to society and/or The Church NSFW.

The Irish law was brought around the same time as the UK one (also 10pm), its a buying spree there just before 10pm in all the supermarkets over there.

They can't really use the argument that stopping the sale of cigarettes after 10pm would curb underage smoking, because that would be stupid.

What is the official reason for such a thing? It cant really be to stop underage drinking. To prevent than they would be better off only allowing them to open AFTER 10pm, not before.Every time teenagers have asked me to buy them alcohol it has been a saturday afternoon. They all have to be home for their dinner or mammy would be pissed.

Only thing I can see it stopping is people going in to buy alcohol after 3 when the nightclubs close but I cant really see it being worth their while opening that late anyway.

I don't know but it's bloody annoying. Friend bailed on me to go fo the cinema last night at the last minute, so I said I'd get a few bottles at home instead.by the time I got to the nearest centra it was too late. I have no idea what the actual goal of closing the off license early is.

This is there then reason, looks a bit laughable IMO especially the last part.

Justice Minister Dermot Ahern said: “The act places restriction on the availability and visibility of alcohol and provides for more effective enforcement to deal with the consequences of alcohol abuse.

“The introduction of fixed penalty charges for offences of intoxication in a public place and disorderly conduct will not only lead to more efficient use of public resources but hopefully will also support more responsible behaviour on the part of those concerned,” he said.

Advertising alcohol and cut-price drink deals will also be regulated. There will be no new licences for early houses under the new legislation.

More than 50 early houses operate nationwide and the Government scrapped plans late last month to abolish them under the overhaul of the drinking laws.

The head of the country’s largest chain of dedicated off-licences has claimed the 10pm curfew will lead to mass confusion among consumers and could pose a security risk to staff in convenience stores and garage forecourts who remain open after that time.

Tom Desmond, managing director of the GWL Group (Galvins Wholesale Limited), who operate the Carry Out franchise, said: “This is going to cause mass confusion among consumers. There is also a security issue here for staff in convenience stores and garage forecourts when late-night consumers are refused alcohol after 10pm.”

Chances are that you'll find a Chinese restaurant that will sell alcohol out of hours. Not naming places, but there was always one in Galway that was dubbed the Winese. They always seemed to make a tidy profit.

An Indian restaurant in Limerick would sell a few bottles of beer after 10 pm with your take away if you asked.
