Ideal place to setup camp in a zombie apocalypse?

I was discussing The Walking Dead with my mates at the weekemd over a couple of beers, for those who have never seen it you should have a good hard look at yourself because Its a great tv series about a zombie apocalypse & the survival of the human race.

Anyway we were talking about where you would want to setup camp in the unlkely event of a zombie apocalypse. I said i would hold myself up in a supermarket, maybe a Tesco. It wouldnt be Aldi or Lidl anyway..who wants to be living off cheaply branded rich tea biscuits or wearing a fake rugby world cup jacket for the rest of your days. Nah i want that McVities sh!t & a decent knitted jumper. Plus a lot of Tescos have a Tech/entertainment departments so your going to be able to hook up that PS4, play video games & watch countless dvds while the zombies are outside muching on everyone in sight. Id let people in but id probably be too busy playing GTA IV to be honest. I cant think of any downsides to living in Tesco, id probably live there now if i could.

Precisely, everyone will go there, which means there will be a plentiful supply of tasty brains. They're the perfect spots to set up!

Somewhere like Clare island, remote enough that there won't be too many zombies to deal with but close enough to mainland for supplies etc

You'd be able to fish farm etc and set up defences in one of the buildings.

I have probably given this more thought then i'd like to admit......

Fair to say no where would be perfectly safe & are likely be in danger everyday..you could live out at sea but would still need to come back on land for fresh water & food unless you could live off fish & hope it rains a lot..il take my chances in Tesco

you are also close enough to the vegetable garden the Phoenix park and there is plenty of clean water

Ok, my rough plan cause i'm not getting into details especially online where so many people could see it would be something like. Get a few bikes and repair kits. This is gonna be your main mode of transport. No fuel very little maintainance and can be carried. Next somewhere open, you need to see whats around you. This could obviously lead to problems with bandits etc but there are steps that could be taken to reduce exposure.

basic equipment would be flint steel, small axe, telescopic fishing rod, charcoal, wind up torch, a small telescope, perhaps a lazer pointer, wind up GPS and walkie talkies and a solar usb charger too. Basic first aid kits and generic antibiotics are a must have too.

A place by the coast and maybe a forest would be ideal. a few hidden boats would allow easy escape from anything you wanted to get away from, no engines though, unreliable and noisy. setting up a perimater is easy enough too, rig it in such a way that if a wire or whatever is tripped a sound unique to that area or line is sounded. That way you know what direction they are coming from instead of scanning and listening. multiple lines that are triggered afer the first would give an even clearer direction indication. animal traps can easily be modified to capture human size targets too.

With something like this you have to remember that the more basic your equipment and plan the better. if you are relying on something having fuel you are gonna be dissappointed and batteries will die at the worst times.

I think hiding in a supermarket is a bad idea if you have long term intentions, too many entrances and too hard to clear.
I'd want a place with 2/4 entrances - easier to escape.
I'd want an armored car of some sort, not sure where to find them tbh.
A not so bad place to live would be maybe a ship?
Or.... get to the nearest army barracks. Get as many weapons as possible.
Try and gather 20/30 people and make sure there are more guns than people.
Feck off onto my new cruise liner and sail away to a nice appropriately sized island.
Start rebuilding civilization (repopulating will be my favourite task) and then slowly wage war braveheart style on a now dead Ireland

Now THATS a movie!

you seem to be living in a ditch. It's a zombie apocolypse, not season 27 of survivor....

get yourself secure. get yourself protected. get yourself a generator. get yourself supplies.

in theory

4 million people in ireland.
lets assume every person kills 1 zombie.
every zombie rips asunder 1 in 2 victims and gorges on their bodies.

1 million left, zombies or survivors left to roam the streets - thats being generous.

for sake of arguement lets say 900,000 are zombies/ 100,000 survivors. you only need to kill 9 zombies each.

most of these are in or around urban populations. they are not coming down from dublin because they heard it on the zombie grapevine some lad is living in a tescos in offaly etc... A finite amount will be in your location for an period of time. this wont change rapidly. there would be days where you wouldnt see a zombie and places where you might see hundreds.

if it's a zombie apocolypse. whats your rush, you have the rest of your life to kill zombies. get the basics right first. food water shelter protection etc..

Permanent food supply, although it might take a year to fully organise.
Loads of tools / weapons, might even have a shotgun.
Probably remote enough that's it not mad dangerous.
Probably has a big diesel tank, which could be handy.

Ireland is pretty sparsely populated once you go outside Dublin, so getting out of Dublin would be priority number 1. Depending on how bad the outbreak was and where it originated I'd either immediately get the hell out of dodge or I would go somewhere like the Tesco in Naas to stock up on as much as I could fit in my car (water, tinned foods, traveling cooking supplies, things for laying traps catching rabbits like rope and wire if I can find any, knives, lighters, lots of lighter fluid, sleeping bags, torches, batteries, tents & tarp if I can find em, clothes and backpacks if I haven't managed to bring my own from home etc.). Same for petrol, as many of those handheld gallon tanks as I could get my hands on (probably not gonna be a lot, but nice to have extra).

I'd then find somewhere really remote that has a forest, like Killarney national park or someplace like it and set up camp. If you set up a decent camp you should very rarely if ever need to go back to a town to restock.

Buildings are only going to draw the wrong sort of attention. Once you are out of urban centres your biggest concerns are other survivors wanting to steal your stuff, so unless you are armed to the teeth I wouldn't want to take my chances.

Other survivors might not be an issue. Go cannibal. instead of competition, they're food. If they're food, they won't be zombies. Win-win.

Plus, you can nick their supplies.

among this group you have people that couldn't kill, if their child for instance is infected could you bash its head in? The number of fighting fit people now have slumped in a HUGE way and thats not including accidents by the survivors where leg breaks or injuries would cripple them. Morale would slump, security would drop etc etc

There's plenty of fairly well armed boats in Portsmouth harbour, I'd "borrow" one of them. I reckon a Phalanx would do a pretty good job of keeping zombies away and you could even head.to the Caribbean for the winter.

it is and it isn't. While there are few large populations outside of Dublin you'd be hard pushed to find a place in this country where you would be able to do a 360 on the spot and not see a house somewhere. anyone coming out of Dublin will more than likely stigmatized by anyone they meet, attacked and ran from every town they come across as Dubs are the most likely to be infected and there will be too many streaming out of the city for the rest of the country to be sympathetic to their plight.

On your way there break into as many chemists as you can and steal all the anti-biotics.

Assuming it's the apocalypse, you probably want to go somewhere we can start fresh, but feels safe doing so, a small island makes that possible.

Zombies sink and can just walk across the bottom of the sea. you run into problems here with feeding people too.

yes you can fish but with weather like what we had recently its a really REALLY bad idea. and if the Islands are like the ones in Donegal the soil is pretty crappy for growing anything out there. and lots of people are going to have your idea so there won't be enough area to grow/fish enough for everyone
