Ah our old red xli plus with while dials and five spoke wheels was a savage car, they were surprisingly nippy for a 1.3 and very spacious in the back also.

I'm a dealer, so what I drive is what I sit into! :P
It depends on what you want out of your bangernom budget really, I like a luxobarge for small outlay personally.

yeah, they not as bad, but nowt special either. Take one for a spin! If you are down that kind of market, consider a mazda 3 if you have enough cash to bag one.

Always found them and the avensis a sh1t driving experience, didn't like it at all.
I went from a corolla to a mazda 3 and for the first while until I couldn't believe the difference in driving.

It is why original top gear compared the corolla to white goods.

That Scenic is a bargain. My ex-GF had one, it's been in the family for 11 years and has never broken down. The engine is fine for what it's supposed to do, it can cruise at 120 kmh on a motorway when needed. Very practical car, very comfortable and something like that costing €750 with 9 months NCT is a serious bargain IMO.

But what happens when you need to go from 120kmh up to 135? Throw away the stopwatch and breakout the calendar?

The car does what it's supposed to do very well. FWIW we drove to the Pyrennees for a couple of weeks, it sat on 140 kmh the whole way back in 33 C heat, never even a hint of warming up.

No the acceleration isn't the best but if I want a fast family car I'll get a SAAB 9-5 2.3 estate or a 525i Touring and pay the equivalent high running costs.

The Scenic is fine for driving around town/country or whatever. It's no speed king but it doesn't try to give the impression that it is one either. If you're looking for a good value family car that's where I'd start.

But you see, a lot of car buyers are happy with that. They don't want to pay the inflated extra price for the 1.6 or 2.0 or pay ridiculous surcharges for air-con or leather etc. They're happy with a 1.4, it matches their needs and driving style, they like the fact that it's cheaper to run over a couple of years.

Most people aren't self styled "petrol heads" and are quite happy to go with a 1.4 in that car. The engine in my experience was fine in it, not fast but not deadly slow either. I personally rarely drive anything under 2.0 but in the Scenic a 1.4 is fine.

Different strokes for different folks.

But seriously, even in the desert, driving at high speed will sufficiently cool any engine (with a functioning cooling system)

It did 146 kmh, as per a satnav (on a private road).:D

But you are right, it isn't speed that would overheat an engine that is working correctly, it is (amongst a lot of things) being under load in high temperatures.

My point is that even if the engine is under full load, driving in very warm outside temperatures, the high speed the car is doing* will be sufficient to cool it

*High speed means a lot of air cooling of the hot water in the radiator, so it is cool enough to go back around the hot engine and cool it down

No mention of belt, pump and variator being done.
Unless it can be backed up/verified then at that mileage it may need a new one fairly quick.

I know but with NCT and tax it's a brilliant candidate for timing belt roulette or a semi barge to tide you over between cars

That is certainly true. Timing belt aint the only thing that can go wrong on them though....wishbones, drop links, anything electrical, the list goes on....of course Id like one though:rolleyes:

The thought that the belt might break at any time soon can't be the nicest feeling in the world though. Especially if on the motorway or stuck in city traffic.
