Jim Galvin has confirmed that Stephen Cluxton is to remain as Captain for 2014.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,095 ✭✭✭ANXIOUS

Anyone have any thoughts on today's match? Can't see any of the forwards making an impression come championship. Thought the kickouts were a bit rusty but improved throughout the game. Cluxton pulled off a great save in the second half. Disappointing that Cullen and Kevin Mc didn't start let alone come on.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,775 ✭✭✭✭Slattsy

Wasn't at the game so can't comment too muchbut it's always great to win with a second string team.

Shows the depth of the panel.

Senior Hurling Challenge result from today lads Waterford 2-24 Dublin 3-13.

In reality I'd say it was a third choice team.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,952 ✭✭✭✭Stoner

Didn't see anything great today for an alternative midfield. Thought Hudson was poor by the standards he set last year, Duffy won most of the ball played down the middle for the home team. I thought George had a couple of nice touches at full back. Whelan wasn't too bad in the first half. The Westmeath half back line was very small.

It was a decent enough game and close till the end, a draw wouldn't have been unfair. Dolan was his usual sharp self when he came on but Cooper was brought on at the same time as him and went on him straight away.

Has Shane Supple Been dropped or are they just trying there options sean currie was the sub keeper today does anyone know if supple always played as sub in the obryne games last year when cluxton played

Turned out a lot better day weather wise than I was expecting and enjoyable game for January. Was good to see Mick Fitz & Nolan on the pitch and young Dawson get a run out too. There's a depth of talent in the back line, thought Daly was quite effective in that role. While not a panic stations situation we're noticeably weak in midfield without the recognised big guns.

The league match will show a little bit more than yesterday - but I get the impression that Westmeath will set up ultra defensive and may spend the league plugging holes rather than being an attacking threat.

Warm hat and flask ready for Wednesday :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,952 ✭✭✭✭Stoner

What's on Wednesday? There was a very small home crowd yesterday, a westmeath man sat beside me, between us we estimated 10 to 15 to one in favour of Dublin in the crowd, it's a pity as it did turn into a great day for this time of year only rained on the way home. There was a bit of bite in the game too.

Supple has left the panel work commitments etc, just found out from a reliable source

I thought Sean George was very impressive at full back. Paul McShane's doppleganger, Fanning, who came on at half time did quite well. Jason Whelan started well, but faded out quite badly. A number of players should definitely get another run. Walsh, Dawson and Lowndes got into the game as it progressed. Darren Daly looked our best player.

It's funny how the likes of Guckian, who up until now hasn't been a championship starter, looks a step above those starting out. I think he has had two seasons now in the OB cup and the league and might be an option later in the year.

Great to see Kevin Nolan and Mick Fitz out on the pitch.

Midfield didn't do well, although their number 8 had a very good game. Carthy looks like a guy with huge potential. Dessie Dolan is quality.

I missed the Dub stars games, so it was great to be back out after the Christmas Break.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,593 ✭✭✭DoctaDee

The reality of OB games is that 70% of the starters will make very little impression on the team, even towards the end of the league campaign. If Galvins intention is to blood young/promising lads I'd love to see Ted Furman get a run

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,952 ✭✭✭✭Stoner

I agree Furman is due a run, he's a pure no 14, if the rest of them could learn to pass he might actually stick a few goals, worth a look . Lol on the Paul McShane reference I said it to my buddy and the Westmeath lad beside me but neither knew who McShane was, he got a nice point with his first kick of the ball, made a mess of the second attempt though, but he's a good build strong looking man, thought young Walsh got around well too.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,584 ✭✭✭TouchingVirus

I've no insights into the team or anything but I'd just like to say I'm incredibly excited to get back into the swing of things tomorrow evening, it has been a long four months :D

    Oh snap ! :D

Don't think that Furman will make it. There are just too many quality forwards in the queue ahead of him.

Two key members of the backroom team have stood down citing work and study commitments. They will be missed. :(

That'll do nicely, some fresh blood in there and the likes of Whelan given another shot to see if he fades in the second half again. Will be even more interesting to see who is retained for the league. Super excited, roll on 7:45!

Does the season ticket cover the O'Byrne? Heading over later and will chance my arm at the gate anyway

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,569 ✭✭✭✭ProudDUB

No, it is 10 quid at the gate. It goes towards an injured players fund. Every one has to pay it. Having a Parnell Pass or a season ticket won't get you in for free.

^-- This. The Season Tickets are for League/Championship fixtures only. See you there in 40 mins. I'll be there on my own this evening since the father's working so if any of you spot a guy with glasses in a grey jacket with brown trousers and feels like embarrassing themselves asking if he's from the internet feel free to say hello :D

I had no team sheet with subs on it but it was him I'd say. Banged in a cracker for number 1 following a blissful over the top pass and outran two lads for number 2 smashing it into the net from the ground. Supersub stuff, we were awful flat without him and Jonny Cooper

Cooper was great when he came on, that Watson lad missed the best goal chance he had, he fairly stuck the other two, his point was our second best IMHO, thought that lad I think it was Martin was decent enough at no 9.
    Keenan was quite for Louth.

I like George at no 3, but he had a far better first half, made some poor calls to leave his man in the second half, he's strong, likes to set his man up for the shoulders.

The ref seemed at sea with the black card, Nelson got one for what looked like a late hand in the face, them Keenan did the same to Cooper but got a yellow, cynical stuff from both sides got yellow cards, it's early days on the black card alright.

Lads, bit off topic from the match last night but I was just about to book a hotel in Mayo for the Dubs V Mayo league match on the 29th March but the listings are saying the match is to be played in Croke park.

We played Mayo in Croker last year, or am I mad!!! The year before was the cancelled match due to fog in Mayo. Am I missing a year :D

LOL... Philly with Kickhams anyway has a lot more football in him than he's given credit for ... but centre forward ... not even he would've expected that !!
I didn't get up last night.. emmm I got home "late" from Mullingar and with the young lad not wanting to head up, my travel pass was revoked :o Seems by all accounts to have been a very disjointed affair. Fair play to George he was very assured last Sunday and appears to have been again last night ... his only problem is minding the jersey for ROC (he would've been a nailed on certainty if he'd stuck with Laois :)

You're not, 2012 was McHale Park (twice :D) and 2013 was Croker. It should be McHale Park again this year but the GAA have it down as being in Croke Park. There's also the Mayo GAA blog which lists the same thing. Perhaps there's some redevelopment in McHale park that weekend or something?

Fixtures are re-done every 2 years so it's not always home 1 year and away the next

Yeah seen it on their home page for fixtures also. So our away fixtures are DERRY, TYRONE and WESTMEATH. Darn, don't see any over nights there that interest me... Day trips it is this year so...

Pick up a hurling season ticket along with the football, then you've an overnighter in Galway, Waterford or Tipperary too :D

Yep. Fixtures are on a two year cycle of being home and away. 2014 is the start of a new cycle. It can't be done on a straight back to back basis, due to the relegation & promotion of two counties into and out of every division every year. It works out that each county gets the same amount of home and away games over the two years. (Unless they are Kildare. :P ) It just may not look like it sometimes, when a county has a home game at the end of one cycle (such as Dublin/Mayo in Croker in 2013) and then has the same one at the start of the next.

Cooper was excellent in the second half, full of energy and commitment. The first 30 mins was turgid stuff. They defended well but we couldn't hit a barn door. Even the point we scored, although well worked, I felt Whelan would go for goal and miss. That being said the rain was awful.

Second half was much better. Hudson pointed a couple of nice frees, super point from Carthy, and some great finishing from Watson. Sean George looks like someone who could be a bit special, he has a bit of the hardman in him. But relatively cool and unruffled at the same time. Does he have the pace to deal with top class forwards?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,584 ✭✭✭TouchingVirus

Any word on Chris Guckian? He pulled up awfully sharp with what I suspect was a hamstring issue midway through the second half.

I've just noticed that our league matches for football are taking place in HQ while hurling is confined to Parnell Park this year with no double-headers. This got me thinking about a mid-sized stadium and I found out that back in 2011 Dublin GAA launched their new 2011-2017 strategy which included a proposal to building a new mid-sized stadium. I'd be fairly sure somebody put the kabosh on this because we're into 2014 and I can't find anything on it. Anybody have any news or recent progress reports on that initiative or the strategy itself?

Was the proposal to do it in Tallaght?

If it was that between SDCC, Thomas Davis and Shamrock Rovers the whole thing ended up in court and turned out the municipal ground would not accommodate GAA

No, the proposal was a green field site or similar identified with the help of NAMA on the outskirts of Dublin for a ~25-30,000 seater. I thought the Thomas Davis/Rovers thing was settled way back in 2007 and happened when it was being built

Maybe. Thought SDCC/GAA would have liked Tallaght as the venue but the Sports Minister told them to look towards Rathcoole or somewhere.
