Incompetent Irish political gombeenism part 9653.

So first a buddy of the chairman Pat Cox is made ceo with no public competition. Then the artistic director resigns due to being hamstrung. Shane Ross in his role as public accounts Committee member has raised concerns and minister for state Joe Costello has labelled the project a "shambles".

So what could have been a good news story and a boost for the region has been sullied by incompetence, mismanagement and shleeveenism.

Business as usual.

Limerick city has been hurting badly for a long time now. The new walkway is nice but to be honest the main streets are embarrassing to look at with all the closed shops and frozen scaffolding. Not to mention the nasty rep it has because of some bad apples ruining it all.

The walkway is pretty class looking but there's sod all down there to warrant strolling along it, bar Clohessy's and the restaurants at the other end. It's a depressing, ugly town for the most part, Patrick St is a dump and it's the first thing people coming in from that side of the city see.

Another issue I would have with this is that they got a grant of €6 million from An Roinn Chultúr agus Gaeltachta for a cultural festival, and not a sign of the Irish Language anywhere involved. It would seem that the language has nothing to do with culture here.

Why would it? Limerick is not in the Gaeltacht so the money came from the Cultúr wing of the Roinn.

So just what is this national city of culture bollox anyway ?

From the press release announcing it back in 2012.

"An EU study in 2004 found that the designation of European Capital of Culture served as a catalyst for the cultural development and transformation of the chosen city, and it is aimed to replicate these benefits on the national stage through this initiative."

So, basically, it denotes a city where any form of culture is utterly absent. Meanwhile the locals (yokels ?) think they've been awarded a prize as opposed to having been identified as uncultured yobbos.

Thank god we've heaps of spare money to spend on this sort of thing is all I can say.

Would just add I would think it's more Architecture, Music Anything particular unique language may be a common denominator . Are peoples in south America still Spanish and Portuguese ? Although I would say Irish is a beautiful language like many others

For the vast majority of Irish people the Irish language holds no significance. I include myself in that. I personally feel that money spent promoting the Irish language is money badly spent. I'm not deliberately trying to offend anyone, I just think that it's time to stop flogging a dead horse.
