When an online retailer, with numerous physical retail premises open 362 days or so per year specifies #X 'working' days as a delivery lead-time are they entitled to limit that term to Mon-Fri excluding public holidays?

Assuming you're talking about having something posted to you that you ordered from an online retailer, there isn't a postal service at weekends so they don't include those days, only your traditional "working days". Nothing to do with having their own shops open at weekends.

Why wouldn't they be?

It's a common phrase which refers to Mon-Fri.

The reason online retailers use it is because their delivery times (in and out) are restricted by national postal services, which generally only operate working days. Even if it gets picked and packed today, it can't leave their premises till Monday morning.

It was a rhetorical question, I didn't want an answer. I was pointing out that the online retailer has no control over the days that the postal service operates.

So what if the physical retail premises are open Monday to Sunday? The online end of most retailers operate from separate warehouse(s) or dispatch centre(s) and are probably only open Monday to Friday.

Alot of warehouses would work Saturday and be back working Sunday night for dispatching so they work 7 days in effect.

They're a separate operation to the retail shops though, the opening hours of one have no impact on the other.

Some couriers deliver on a Saturday in the UK.

I work for an online retailer and we still have to work weekends! Doesn't mean you get your post delivered on weekends though..

The postman delivers on a Saturday it's a generally accepted postal day in Uk. Couldn't get my head around that when I first moved here, no Saturday post ....? And you'd think that a national chainstore attempting to break into the online market would be prepared to pay a bit of overtime to existing workers in order to facilitate customers who bought in good faith from its sale. If that wasn't possible, why not hire extra workers to do the same and tell customers it was doing just that even IF the warehouse didn't generally work weekends.

In 1990, 28 days delivery for distance-orders was acceptable. In 2014 it is not.

We're not dealing with 'mail' order where the order goes in by post and gets dealt with by clerks writing out the details and shuffling physical paper. In 2014 consumers have choices/alternatives/other options. I'm using a baseline of comparison with other online shops including Debenhams. It was easier for me to order online from them pre-Christmas than to drive to Blackrock, just a few miles away. The status of my order was evident from the outset and it was promptly and efficiently delivered.

I think you forgot to read the large print when making your order. They specifically said they hope for 5 working day turn around except at busy periods. I seriously consider Christmas a busy period, don't you?

Plus, the way most companies are set up now, is that their online retail operation is a totally separate entity to the bricks and mortar stores.

How many actual working days is it since your order OP?

When I ordered on Christmas Eve there was no large print. People who ordered long after me have received their orders. Coming up to Christmas is busy, a sale is busy, a company should staff their enterprise and roster hours accordingly.

I would imagine you be best sticking with them in the future then.

Your Order has been outstanding approx 5 working days and you get all hot and bothered about it. Talk about first world problems. When I was ordering on the 24th it specifically said we aim to deliver within 5 working days except at busy periods such as Christmas.

Christmas Eve! For some bricks and mortar stores that could be as little as 4 working days! I called to a supplier locally yesterday that was still closed for Christmas!
