PC will only freeze if playing videos online on a secondary screen.
GPU acceleration on/off does not fix the problem.

I am running out of options...

Try disabling hardware acceleration support, e.g. for youtube-left click and settings and un-tick the "Enable acceleration support" box.

Crash could be caused while gaming if the video triggers hardware acceleration support, the video freezes because the card can't do both at the same time.

They might try fob you off, but it's a legitimate cause for return. I don't think it will be much of an issue with EVGA, though. They're supposed to be fantastic customer care wise.

There are also some ways too minimise the effects of it (takes a bit of research though). I'd try going down the RMA route tbh.

Many high end cards have cool whine in high FPS (several hundreds, thousands FPS) situations, but if you're getting it in normal (gaming or idle) use, that's bad.

Just submitted a ticket there. I sort of figured I'd be ok, but as it's a grey area (there being nothing "wrong" with the card performance-wise, etc.) I wasn't sure.

Yeah, it's happening in every game I've played so far. It's a shame too because it's holding up the water cooling stuff going in. Going to see if I have enough for the Advance RMA I think.

I experience a slight bit of coil whine from my 780 but only at stupidly high fps.

That's a pity because that is a problem! You have it water cooled? You could flash a BIOS with voltage control on it and get it to 1300-1350 MHz 24/7 which would be cool

I don't have it water cooled yet, but the rads and blocks and all that are sitting here beside me.

Might/might not flash BIOS. As it stands I'm on a 1680x1050 monitor while I wait for G-Sync, so there's no real need.

that's the funny thing, crash does NOT happen when gaming. PC freezes when watching videos on second monitor without anything happening on primary monitor. It does not crash when gaming and watching videos at same time. It does not crash when watching videos on primary monitor without game on.

Very odd. Sounds driver related to me though. Maybe search nvidia forums for similar issues, Good luck with it.

Edit; Just re - read your post, try forcing whatever player you are using to use hardware acceleration instead of software and see if you can watch movies on the second screen without crashing.

best thing really, is get a small distro (smaller the better imo), and install, break, reinstall, break, fix, break, reinstall etc You'll learn far more doing so then just from reading imo. Google up the specific issues or queries, and learn to read man pages

I use dilute isopropanol, which, as far as I am aware, is the same as surgical spirits and rubbing alcohol.

Yes, it's surgical spirits. The chemist had individually packaged wipes with surgical spirit for 5 cents each, so I just got a few of those. Works perfectly. You can wipe off most of the old paste with ordinary paper towel, you only need the spirits to clean the remaining residue afterwards.

Those of you with the new 212 evo coolers - make sure to read the mounting instructions carefully. There's also some good youtube videos that show the mounting process. The mounting pieces can be used in several different positions (for different motherboard socket types). If you get it wrong it will wobble around instead of sitting secure.

Not sure under what forum to address this question so thought I would ask it here as I know there are some knowledgeable people here with regards to all areas of tech!

My plan is to get a good av receiver and 5.1 speaker separates for my living room along with a 50inch tv (i have been saving for a while now). Im wondering in relation to network access which is very important - is it more important that the receiver is network capable or the tv, or both for that matter??

My thinking was that it was the receiver is the most important and after that it doesn't really matter but I am starting to question myself. I have a htpc build in the living room also that will remain as I think its the handiest for web browsing.

anyone here with a similar setup?
