Here's a great idea, my county is paying for a free taxis tonight, between 10pm and 3am to take you from any bar/restaurant home (not to another bar)

Should Irish councils consider similar schemes?

Find the spare cash, then start talking about what councils 'should' do. I'm sure there are other areas of greater need if there's any spare pennies than providing transport so that people can drink more and not have to fund a cab home.

The last government tried to bring this in. The rural transport scheme is there and Eamonn O'Cuiv wanted to run it at night too

Why - I'd say they would do well on tips, no?

Pay them to be out +mileage. They'd probably do better than on the meter with tips.

You be a hard neck to not tip on NYE after a free taxi ride. Although there's some right Mr Pinks on here.

Is your county the recipient of property tax, or whatever the USA equivalent is?

It used to be that county councils were in receipt of rates to cover water and waste and other utilities that they provided, but the residential rates were abolished and they don't get the property tax which now goes to central govt. So they don't actually have much money.

I wonder will they actually get the water tax? And while waste removal (bin collections) have been privatised, there is a lot more people dumping their rubbish into street rubbish bins, or just leaving it on street corners (either cos they can't afford the charge or because they're stingy sh*teheads) - in which case the council is liable for the clean-up.

So no. I wouldn't expect the council to cover taxi charges, especially since the HSE is funded centrally.

(Off topic: this is why I will never support votes for emigrants. Only those who have to live with the consequences should be eligable to vote. Emigrants often don't understand the issues we're grappling with here)

and thats what they get for privatising the refuse collection. Country roads take the brunt. Didnt take a genius to figure out what would happen.

First of all Irish taxi drivers would just charge people anyway. Secondly I dont see why the councils would or should pay for taxis for people to go out on the lash. Why not buy everyone a round while they're at it too ?

Yes to the tune of some $2000-$8000 a year per house.
