Okay; its a small bit overpriced, but I guess you get what you pay for. This looks as clean as a whistle and the ad suggests its well taken care of. If you could knock €200 off then it would be a reasonable buy at €1000. Just bin the wheel trims.

It will probably sell for near enough a grand, but bejesus there are so many much nicer, better and newer cars out there for that kinda money. Why anyone would buy an overpriced old Toyota is beyond me

You know how it is, how a lot of Irish people view Toyota. In fairness, it looks very well and it will most probably give a lot of hassle free service to whomever buys it.

I'd like to see how all these "much nicer, better newer cars" stack up against that Corolla's reliability, build quality and effeciency. I've a feeling they'd fall well short in comparison tbh, especially those at that end of the market.

That car at €1200 isn't that/ if at all over priced. It looks to be in very good condition for it's age and they are about the best you can get for no nonsense, hassle free a-b motoring.

My radar is tweaking why would anybody sell a car if they just replaced the clutch a few days before ?? Could it be they knew there was some other huge bill in the pipe work coming through. For a mechanical type still good buy a ~2002 is still possibly worth buying second hand engine same type and throwing it in if original engine blew up after a few weeks . However for average joe its emperor cravat "buyer beware" territory is my guess

Especially when you see what a much newer Mondeo can be got for now - much roomier, more suited to a family, comfier, safer etc.

If he does the clutch someone might buy it for 600 but if he doesnt nobody will. Also clutches arent expensive if you can fit it yoursef.

A 1.8 or 2.0 Mondeo would be considerably more expensive to run over a 1.3 Corolla.

I'd probably take a Mondeo over one though.

To be fair, you could pick up a new bonnet cheaply enough with what you've saved on this compared to others.

And as for the chain, like every ad, if the ad does not mention it, well then theres nothing to worry about until you see it

Id be changing the bonnet for a second hand oem bonnet. The one on that car looks to be a cheap aftermarket bonnet.

That begs the question though, why was the bonnet changed. Id be having a good look around the slam panel area, radiator support and chassis legs for accident damage.

Timing chains usually don't give trouble in these unless oil change intervals are seriously neglected. It should be obvious by listing to the engine if the chain is noisy. If it's noisy id be walking away.

It has all of those advantages over a corolla I will give the mondeo that much, however in my experience those mondeos are no where near as well built, as reliable or as efficient as those corollas.

I don't think anyone can argue with that either

If one only has the money to buy the bangernomics car and one really can't afford anything to go wrong with it at all and the budget for running costs is very, very small, it is hard not to advise someone to get a 1.0 K11 Micra, a 1.0 Yaris or a 1.3 Corolla

That said, slightly less cheap to run and slightly less reliable cars can be bought for less and offer spectacularly better value / comfort / luxury for money. Particularly 1.8l and bigger petrol engined D-class (family size) cars...

and in terms of insurance, cheaper than a corolla equivalent and especially more so then a civic saloon.

Reliability yes they are superb in that regard.

They don't have the build quality or the rust protection to match a civic or a corolla though and tbh both can be got for around that money without an nct.

Also if going for an almera of that vintage a sport model would be a better bet. While there is nothing whatsoever sporty about them, they do have nicer seats and interior than the standard car, electric sunroof and electric front windows and 14" alloys.
