A friend of mine does a lot of work in irish prisons. Apparently they hand out cartons of cigarettes to prisoners every Christmas.

Do you have a any real life examples of how a regular Joe Soap can fall through the net? I agree that surely not all homeless people are junkies but I can't fathom how one can end up homeless. Surely there's a family member somwhere to help you out.

I have nothing but respect for SVDP. They have one single collection at mass to help the tens of thousands of irish people who live in poverty. People who have been given a **** life, no one could imagine. SVDP dont use ****ty street collectors or ask for a constant direct debit. They ask for a few euro if you can spare it.

Its the only charity I support. I cant understand why people donate to dogs charities, when you see countless homeless people all over Dublin and thousands of people going to bed hungry at night.

They have the giving tree appeal which I think is great - toys for young kids born into deprived circumstances. I guess those little kids are all junkies too though... :rolleyes:

SVDP are an amazing charity. They helped my family out a lot when we were kids as my parents were in and out of work a lot and could barely afford a bag of spuds and a tray of eggs to feed the 6 of us for the week, if it weren't for the SVDP none of us kids would have had a Christmas present or Christmas dinner until I was were around 8, when my parents finally got back on their feet. We're all adults now and we all donate money to them every month, they were just fantastic. But comments like yours, OP, discourages others from donating badly needed money. "Handing out money to junkies", as you put it, is a gross exaggeration. They will help out anybody whom is in need of a helping hand, whether they're a drug addict or a struggling family or a lonely pensioner, and frankly, it's none of your business who they give money to if you're not donating to them yourself.
