Publicans and 12 pubs of Christmas

The owner of the Swan pub on Aungier Street has told the Irish Sun that he has banned the custom from his premises.

He told the paper: “Certainly later in the day they’re not welcome and we’ll make a judgement call if they’re in earlier.

“As a publican you’re not allowed by law to serve anyone who is drunk yet clearly score of people are drunk later in the day and getting served.”

The pub owner said he finds the new tradition a sloppy one, with the crawls being badly organised, and the customers it brings to his pub for the one evening, not being seen again in the year.

I doubt this fella has a problem with serving people on a regular Saturday night where many people have been served well beyond the point of being 'drunk''.

As for his line about not seeing them again in the year.....is his pub for regulars only then?
Bit of a joke to be honest. Not tarring all publicans with the same brush but first they complain about losing business and when they do get business they whinge just as much.

I was on a 12 pubs on Saturday myself and got turned away from this pub at number 4. Nobody within the group was drunk/messy as the whole thing was organised so that we spent 45 minutes in each pub so people weren't downing their drinks.

If certain publicans don't want my money, then that's grand but don't start crying when your business closes.

The 12 pubs thing started at around the same time people started drinking Captain Morgan. It's clearly a pirate conspiracy to ruin christmas

I have absolutely no interest in going on a '12 pubs' crawl or being near anyone who is on one

Any pub that lets in these groups after 9 or 10 in the evening must be breaking the law on serving alcohol to intoxicated persons

I was on a 12 pubs Saturday last all around Grafton St/Stephens Green area. In my group not one person out of 20 odd was sloppy drunk, nobody even tried to leave a pub carrying a glass and all the women on it were wearing practical shoes. It was one of the best sessions I've had in a long time and a great chance to catch up with friends I normally don't get a chance to see all that often.

They're hardly a fad, grannies have been knitting Christmas jumpers as long as there's been wool.

Anyway, back OT:

The whole thing of rules and a bell... can you not just go on a pub crawl and take in 3 or 4 pubs to catch up with friends? It's a bad idea, especially when people feel compelled (or sometimes are even forced) to drink more than they can handle.

The only thing that annoys me more that being told to drink up, is waiting for others to drink up

I think he's just saying, 4-5 drinks per person every Saturday.
For a group of 10 people that's 200-250 a week for the group so ~10k - 13k a year.

I've been on plenty of 12 pubs, usually around Xmas time, this lark has been going on for years. We've dressed normally, had no bells, maps, rules, etc. Just one lad with the list of 12 in his jacket, and an agreed time limit in each pub. Nobody was loud or obnoxious, well not more than per usual, and sure, some in the party may have been drunk by the time we got to pub 12, indeed some may have been advised to go home at that stage.

Do it with a bit of decorum and it's grand.

Drove through town last night around 9:30 and the state of some people was ridiculous. Throwing up in the Main Street, girls not being able to stand up and hard men thinking they can stand in front of a moving vehicle and be ok. Obviously a 12 pub crowd too as they all had the Xmas attire on. No wonder bar owners refuse to let them in.

Anyway, if you as a pub owner are relying on this kind of business to keep you afloat, you either are the type of bar that caters to hens/stags which is ok, or you're bar is sh/t.

A small group of us do the 12 pubs every year. Dress normally, start early and aim for 45 mins per pub but keep it under the hour is the only rule. We never get messy, we have never been refused entry to any of the pubs (we do the same route every year). We always end up in a 13th pub or staying on in the 12th for a few extra.

Doing it this saturday and can't wait, one of the best days out of the year.

On Baggot Street, up the Lower Baggot Street end, the pubs there have rightly become extremely strict in refusing groups in Christmas jumpers on pub crawls. The amount of people that do the Baggot Mile pub crawl but never, ever set foot in those pubs the rest of the year is crazy!

These pubs are very successful (Toners, Dohenys, O'Donoghues) and have many regulars, most of whom are at least 30 years old. These places don't have bouncers which tells you what the usual crowd are like. Why ruin what they have by letting in messy drunk pub crawlers? The only argument in defence of pub crawls is "Well I'll just take my money elsewhere and not come back during the year" doesn't carry much weight since that person probably doesn't drink there anyway!

I was in there last Saturday gone and it was fine, the crowd were mostly interested in the Rugby. I was taking to a lad outside who was on a 12 pubs trip, bit drunk but fine. Only about 5-6 in their group.

There was a posh couple with a baby in a buggy though, like, a very young child, you couldn't see it as they were crowded around the bloody thing. Now, I would have kicked THEM out! People nearly falling over it as you wouldn't see it until you were right upon it.

People drank their regular drinks : some drank pints, some bottles, some spirits and a mixer etc so even when someone like me who would drink pretty fast normally was finished first, they weren't too far behind anyway.

We started around 4 so it was nice and relaxed all day. When I was younger (headin for 35 now) I have no doubt I would have been the dope having a shot or whatever between drinks but I've a bit more cop on at this stage of my life, not much mind!

I genuinely have not encountered anyone any the worse for wear on any of the 12 pubs than I have seen on a regular weekend night.

12 bottles is just under 7 pints so I would expect most would be grand on that. 12 vodkas is equivalent to about 6.5 pints of heineken in alcohol volume.

Usually full of obnoxious jock types who can hardly handle 2 pints let alone 12 and when they come into the pub with their daft jumpers that they the think are great craic they do nothing but clog up the bar and annoy everyone else who don't need to manufacture a healthy session with rules and nonsense. I'd be delighted if they were banned from my local.

Supporters of 'the 12 pubs of Christmas' are usually the same amateur drinkers that jump on any silly bandwagon. Regular drinkers or 'hardcore' drinkers usually have no time for such silliness.

I work in a pub in the city centre and we have been turning away 12 pubs groups. Why? Because firstly, we don't need to entertain them, we have other customers who we would rather serve and we don't need the bar crawls business. This might sound rude, but it really isn't.

Secondly, as per 12 pubs rules, it is one drink per pub. Being near the end of certain routes, the groups are generally on their way and they tend to be more trouble than they're worth (one round of drinks). Maybe not YOU or YOUR GROUP but as a whole, overall. As stated, we have other customers who don't want to be associated with the 12 pubs.

Thirdly, I don't get the whole 'endurance test' of having 12 pints etc. I can understand the get together and the occasion but it really isn't a badge of honour. Spare a thought for the security / bar staff who are sober and tending to you this Christmas.

Did one a few years ago with the job,organised by some girl who never usually comes out for drinks on a Friday evening or whatever.She had a whole list of stupid rules,like you have to drink with your left hand,if not take a shot etc.I know myself that I can manage 9-10 pints without getting messy,but once shots are thrown in I'd be fecked,so refused to do them.You'd swear I spat in her face by having the gall to question her almighty plan,that she probably printed off mumsnet or something.

Few of the regulars did the same,but all the ones who never come out were hammered by the 4th pub.It's these eejits who ruin it for everyone,because they don't know their limits.
