Are Tesco finished in Ireland, do you shop there anymore?

Read earlier in the week that Tesco sales were down 8% in Q3 2013 (:eek:) which is a massive drop. http://www.rte.ie/news/business/2013/1204/490767-tesco-trading-update/

Then just over an hour ago at peak evening hour on a Friday a few weeks before Xmas I popped into a large Tesco Extra in Dublin and the place was like a ghost town(well about 50 people max

). I just could not believe my eyes as at this time last year it was so busy, I was sick of the queues then.

Today, some checkouts were closed, the maximum queue at the other checkouts was about 2 people :eek: Even 1 girl at a checkout was twiddling her thumbs waiting for a customer! Only 1 person out of a possible 12 shoppers was paying for their stuff at the unmanned ones!!
As I was driving out, the petrol station hadn't a single car on its forecourt!! I guess no wonder as it was charging 1.61 for petrol instead of about 1.50 elsewhere. I promptly threw my 5cent off coupon receipt in the bin.

I know Tesco have been putting prices up on the sly for a good while, so where have ye all gone shopping to? Ze Germans, ze Dealz or your local convenience store? Perhaps Dunnes?

To sum up, wtf has happened to Tesco?

I live in Mulhuddart and the Tesco here closed down 2 months ago just before Aldi opened its doors. The Aldi down the road has a far better trade than that tesco ever had even the spar beside it was busier.

But for me its Dunnes/Superquinn and Aldi id go to the first two first then Aldi for the little things. Tescos cheese always gave my wife the runs. They seem to cut corners on stuff. The Tesco down in Roselawn however is busy.

Used to do weekly shop in tesco, switched to dunnes one week and couldn't believe how cheaper it was.

Rarely go to tesco now.

Bit late for them dropping prices now, when they get the customers back they'll sneakily put them back up as usual

Tesco is the second largest retailer of its kind in the world after walmart , its far bigger than either aldi or lidl

It being from Ireland is just a question of agricultural regulations and perhaps the desire to support local farmers. After that every country produces good quality produce and shit. It was a lot of poor advice re: breastfeeding and introducing solids. They featured 3 mothers and not one of them had successfully breastfed so really the purpose of the article was to sell formula.

There was zero mention of baby led weaning for introducing solids and just a ton of ads. No money off vouchers for anything i would ever buy, lots of vouchers for jars of stuff, saying that what did I expect?!

What's this "Dealz" that everyone's on about? I saw one in The Omni in Santry a while back and now there's one beside Tesco in Galway. I haven't ventured in yet. Can anyone enlighten me?

I my opinion..the discounters are riding the crest of a wave right now. The model worked... in order to get the cheapest prices from suppliers. But the manner in which they do this is susceptible to a serious flaw...and that's there will be no investment into this model by suppliers.

Using cost leadership of existing products into an existing market will work for a time...but all products have a life cycle that require them to become obsolete over time. Without long term supplier/customer relationships, innovation, the lifeblood of any sustainable competitive advantage just wont be there...

As someone who knows the mechanics of the trade I can say that Tesco and Dunnes have figured out comparative strategies.

I had a bad experience in Tescos lately, decided to start going to Dunnes and it's much better and the layout and displays are easier on the eye. ..

The thing I hate about Tesco is the self-service check outs, they rarely work without some assistance from the staff. Also the staff in there all look depressed.

There's an awful lot of griping about Tesco considering that the poll seems to suggest they are second after a double act of Aldi and Lidl. I shop in Tesco, the only thing I agree about is their own-brand kitchenware is rubbish, and i buy most meat in the local butchers, otherwise I shop there. I try to avoid even going into Dunnes having seen some of their messing with suppliers.

I work for tesco and have to say they have got a little bit expensive but people saying the own brand stuff is crap dont realise that its the same as the big brand stuff its made by the same big brand names

I avoid tesco as much as possible for a number of reasons.
They treat all customers as potential thieves, I've never seen security tags on potatoes anywhere else.
They champion replacing employees with machines. They could instead provide quite a bit of partime employment.
They can't be trusted to match the prices at their tills to the prices on their shelves.
Their masive new stores have led to the closure of a lot of smaller retailers.

it might strange to some but i hate the tesco self service units,where i have to check out my own and the employees stand there idle,bought a pack of elastic bands there and one of them wasn't even completed

Vast majority or my shopping was and is done in supervalue.

Superquinn. Occasional bits elsewhere. Disagree that lidl and aldi are miles cheaper and better. If you buy fresh stuff it's about the same. Much more tempting to pick up "luxury" goods though. I think it's a nicer experience, staff are actually useful and I find generally friendly and they have a wider range of fresh goods. Big shop? They pack your bags for you. Plus, the crux of it is that I cannot get everything I need in lidl or aldi. Just can't do it. Shampoo? That Cien paintstripper? No thanks. Toilet rolls very rough, they don't have rice milk (soya very bad for you and can't drink milk), and then a lot of the bits and pieces that fill presses. They're grand when I want a set of thermal underwear, but the crux of it is that I'd be burning more petrol to get to a supermarket that offers minimal actual discount on fresh goods (none on meat) and don't even stock everything I want. Any saving is eaten up by having to go elsewhere for the items I can't get there and it then takes more time.

But tesco? No thanks. They're ****s to Ireland. Hike the prices up here, treat people like crap and try to pass off UK meat as Irish, probably because it was packed up north. The more Irish products you buy in Irish owned shops the better, cos if its imports in foreign shops then you're doing the country no favors.

Lidl all the way….products are good quality and cheap, staff are cheerful (and very helpful) and the service is very efficient….tesco? hate the bloody place, staff are rude and you can never find what you're looking for while listening to 'customers, you can now take advantage of our latest offer which involves screwing either you the customer, the local economy, or our suppliers…..Tesco, every little thing helps'

Love Tesco, especially now the plebs have moved to Aldi/Lidl.

It's like the new M&S... M&S, by the way, has become quite overrun with commoners.

I used to only ever shop in Tesco but a few years ago I started shopping in Aldi, tried the majority of their stuff and loved it.
I used to spend around €130 in Tesco on shopping every week for two adults, but since I've switched to Aldi, I only spend about €50 for two, and that's including meat and cheese and tinned stuff.

I'm really impressed with their stuff, including their burgers (in a black box, Angus I think), tinned tomatoes and orange juice, amongst other things.
I do still shop in Tesco but only for a few things like Heineken and other branded stuff I can't get in Aldi.

One thing I don't like about Aldi is their veg. It's never fresh and never lasts more than a few days, whereas the Tesco veg lasts and lasts.
All in all, my main shop is done in Aldi and a few bits in Tesco and it's really saved us a few bob this year.

BUT I was still buying those Tesco Savings Stamps during the year and have now completed four cards worth, which equals €200 so you can guess where I'll be doing my Christmas shop
