Yeah! Around a month ago, so it was before the rut had started and the deer were fairly settled for the most part!

I would be most grateful for a positive identification of this mushroom. It was growing on a felled conifer tree in the forest at Raven Point near Curracloe in Co Wexford.

I took this recently in Spain:

Threw a nice shadow of itself on the ground. I got quite close and it never moved. It was only afterwards that I considered whether it might have a nasty bite. Anybody know if they are harmful to humans?

Preying Mantis are very tolerant of humans and are not inclined to bite. If they did it would be similar to an ant bite - quick sting quickly gone.

They seem to be quite tollerent of humans and wouldn't be in a rush to fly off like a grasshopper would.
All over the world people keep them as pets.
A bite would be alot more painful than a ant bite but very very rarely it'd happen unless it thought your finger was a prey item.
Most of the time they Havint the strength to physically grab a human finger. But fully grown as I said it'd only be a mistake.
Their my favourite kind of insect. I would love t have one but lifespans are really short. Usually a year in captivity.
The shaolin monks base a type of fight style dedicated to the mantis.

Six years of walking down past Heuston on the way to work, and last week is the first time I've seen a heron with a habit of perching up on the wall with the rest of the rabble. Usually they're on the mudbanks or up to their oxters in shallow water. I've only been carrying my Canon to save a sore shoulder, but if he keeps up the habit I'll take my DSLR along a few mornings and hope for more sunshine.
