Borrowed one of these during the summer when my own bus was in getting serviced, I liked the space, comfort and practicality. Big mileage doesn't bother me if it's been well minded, this one probably falls into that category. €1400, NCT till June 14, the 300,000 km should scare most off so may be space for haggling.

Was looking at an ad for an E36 M3 the other day, car looks like it's in great condition and owner seems like an enthusiast but in the description it has something along the lines of '2.0 in the logbook, cheap tax'.

Someone asked him what would happen if it was involved in an accident, a very defensive answer was given saying that it's insured as an M3 so it will be covered as tax is nothing to do with it. I was just wondering then what would happen if you were stopped the guards, they checked the tax and saw that it wasn't right? I'd imagine it would be seized without question and it wouldn't be as simple as paying back the arrears..

In any case, I'd never consider buying a car that the seller advertised as having false details on the logbook.

My biggest worry with that would be that anybody who wanted to skimp on paying tax on that might have skimped on servicing and maintaining it. An M3 needs more cash to run than an ordinary car and might suffer as a result.

To be honest if I was in the market for one I wouldn't look at that one.

That crossed my mind too, appears to be a well looked after example and is priced accordingly but I have my doubts. Wanted to ask him the question in his ad but decided against it...

Doesn't appear to be a US spec front bumper as there are no amber side markers. Maybe he just preferred that licence plate shape?

True I was thinking that myself, I've often hankered after a US front plate holder for my E34....

Possibly a Jap import as suggested as MH didn't go that high in 99

Its the "changing the logbook" that is the issue. When you loose a logbook, you send off for another one and you also send the details of the car to Shannon. The details being the car registration, chassis number etc. AFAIK the details of the engine will be sent out to you with the logbook. i.e. cc size, fuel type etc. I can't understand where the seller changes these details. They are details that the tax office have relating to the car in question. well, at least if it was ever registered correctly in Ireland before this sale.
The other instance is a fake V5 (or whatever the UK registration doc is called).
I could be totally wrong here but as far as I can guess he must have a "man on the inside" to make it work.
Its no good creating a fake logbook either 'cause you will be caught out when you go to tax the car.

I'd be more inclined to think he didn't want to pay the extortionate tax on a 3.2, so taxed it as a 2 litre and spent the savings on maintenance.

Around 2k is the going rate for these, even at that age. When it comes time to sell again you will get a fair chunk of your money back as they are a very popular car. That coupled with it's tidy condition makes it good bangernomics Imo.

Nothing wrong with your Yaris, the price is bang on the going rate and small Toyotas have always commanded a steep premium over similar cars. It WILL sell for near the asking price and the buyer will get a good price back in a year or two. So you're completely in the clear

That said, would I buy that car? Hell no. I'm not one of Ireland's 3.5 million strong force of Toyota appreciating car buyers. And the old rule of thumb that a Toyota (or any other car) really keeps its value has long gone

I remember the girlfriend of a mate buying a '87 Starlet in '95 for 3k punts :eek:

I remember the going rate for a '99 base 1.4 VW Golf in '07 being €6k :eek:

Those days are long gone and even the most admired cars in this country like those two above are now subject to bangernomics level pricing

2. There's a major issue

If it's like my S40 then the radio doesn't like to play CDR's.
Check that the central locking works ok
Check the handbrake is working
Also listen for suspension knocks (usually droplinks)
