I don't think 20 pints a week would be considered overly harmful. Its well known the weekly safe limits are way too strict so using them to come to the conclusion is not really accurate.

Its too hard to say because there will be weeks like Christmas and the Galway races where you spend a fortune but its hard to distinguish what you spend on what then there will be weeks where you spend little or nothing or drink at a house so are only spending a euro a can or that sort of thing.

300 to 400 per month on average including everything would be more realistic number I reckon.

You throw out the term 'going out'...but why are you going out? you're going out to drink?? Or do you go out sober, because again you don't make it sound that way...

When I don't drink, I also don't tend to eat food after 6:30pm...if I don't drink, I don't take a taxi, I drive myself... 140 euro a week on 'going out' doesn't seem far fetched based on what you have described through this thread

There may be doubt about the lower limits but 20 pints a week is way above the minimum levels, that's about 50-60 units a week depending on strength.

You seem to not like the idea that you spend as much as others have claimed on drink per year. I'd recommend for your own sake and nobody else's that you keep track of how much you spend in a notebook or something. Just jot down a quick note the morning after a night out with a rough guess based on how many pints you had.

If it works out at what you say it is then that's fine, some would consider it a bit on the high side but at least you know yourself what's going on and your fine with that. But if it's a lot higher than you estimate then I'd be concerned if I were you, because it indicates that you are lying to yourself and trying to convince yourself you drink a lot less than you really do.

This requires very little effort and the only reason not to do it would be that you are scared of what it will tell you.

The fact of the matter is when I know what my outgoings are per month on rent, bills, car loan etc and knowing what I earn its easy enough to work out roughly what I spend on nights out and if I was spending 7k a year I'd know about it. I'm not saying I don't spend a fair bit, but its not near as high as some people are estimating. It certainly wouldn't require writing down to roughly work out that sort of thing.

so...what you said about the amount you drink and what your threshold for spending on a night out was a load of sh1te? You don't go out 3 nights a week, spending at least 60 euro on the weekend nights and at least 6 pints on a week night..which, if it's 6 pints and you're paying for taxis and food, you're spending more than the 20 I had factored in.

If you actually read my posts then you might have an idea of what I was saying. I stated more than once that I don't go out 3 nights every week so that straight away is that put to bed. I also said I wouldn't count having 6 pints as a night out so when I said 60 euro for a night out I wasn't referring to going for a couple of pints, and this would make up a decent number of my trips to the pub. I'm also lumping in cans which usually cost me 1 euro each when answering questions about intake. There are also quiet weeks where I spend little or nothing. Every week is different so its hard to give the type of exact figures people appear to want.

There is only a 2k discrepancy between that and the quote you gave. Realistically unless you are living hand to mouth (which it doesn't sound like you are) it would be pretty easy to not notice that go on frivolous stuff though out the year, spending more on eating out at lunch than you think, spending more on clothes than you think, spending more on drink than you think etc Things that don't seem like big bills but add up over time. It's very easy to lose track if you don't have a record.

If you are right then you have little to lose by keeping a record for a little bit, 10 seconds in the morning the night after a few beers is all.

Trust me if I was spending around 600 per month on nights out it would leave me very very short of cash. Its probably approaching that figure at Christmas and race week (again including eating, taxis etc etc) but I'm left totally skint after it so it would be impossible for me to do it every month I just wouldn't have the money.

Also I usually only withdraw cash for going out (almost everything else is debit card) so a quick look at withdrawls will give a good estimate also.

Its not just on alcohol its also food (you have to eat either way) etc and its also my money to use as I want. As for drinking two to three times the limit every week, three times it would be very rare a couple of times a year, twice it sometimes but an awful lot of weeks at or even under it too and some weeks nothing at all.
