Can they do this? I mean what civil rights does a person have if they get stopped at a check points by welfare and the garda enquiring who they are and where they are going?

I cannot and will not be delayed by check points set up by fat-cat overpaid public "servants" in secure jobs who have never known the insecurity of redundancy, job lay offs or paycuts.

This scheme will delay thousands going about their legitimate business and cause them to go back on the dole or leave this embitted isle.

On the east coast the traffic is hectic enough without imposing more delays on people trying to get about and earn a crust.

Will the guards be stopping people coming out of leafy estates in the posh parts of towns through out Ireland or will it, as usual, be the working class council estates in these same towns..?

Yes. Since 1999 and a lot of them concentrated near the border. I have never heard of them causing traffic disruption.

When I went through these checkpoints it went like this.

It was in an already congested route.

Lets use Celbridge as an example. Rush hour.

The Garda use a lay-by with traffic cones. And pull over 7 or 8 cars and vans at a time. There is a welfare person for each car or van stopped.

You are asked your address and a few questions and sent on your way. As you all know you are required by law to always carry your licence while driving, so there will be no problem with ID.
Then you are let go. Simples.

You are waged in traffic anyway so there is no escape or U turns.

I already have to allow 5-10 minutes for such things as accidents, tax/ins road checks and such delays on all my journies. Now I have to add another 5- 10 minutes to each journey to keep Burton happy.

Also tax and insurance are quick and easy to verify and clear, one can only imagine the delays incurred by questioning each suspect "worker" and trawling through ID etc on each suspect.

Already some race meetings marathons etc can add a 1/2 hour or more to my journey to some locations as the cops do not have any concept of time or delay to the general public caused by such events.

Another big culprit are bin lorries which can block up roads for 10-15 minutes at a time screwing up peoples schedules.

Palestine used to have such check points between the occupied territories and the state of Israel, where all the jobs were. The Palestinian workers used to take 2 hours to get into Israel to work. Huge delays and shutdowns used to be imposed arbitrarily much to the inconvenience of the people in the occupied territories. Similar delays and frustrations exist in Gibraltar for workers crossing the border.

I used to think Ireland was above acting like a former fascist state or a state surrounded by sworn deadly enemies.

I don't know . I was alone. The whole thing did make me a little uneasy , even though I was innocent of anything.

But Garda are supposed to come across that way I think. Same as any checkpoint.

Its in their contract firstly. Its to avoid confusion of them working on the private job while they are paid for doing public work. Then there could be a conflict of interest when they are supposed to be neutral. They get paid well enough not to have to do any private work.

You've got to be kidding me? Revenue talk to Social Welfare, we live in 2013 and yet paper documents, remember those? Have to be put into envelopes and stamps bought, then a name and address has to be put on said envelope and delivered by hand, yes hand, not email or anything else from this century.

Ballynagash Urban District Council is alive and kicking, 1950's style. They've probably got pictures of Arch Bishop McQuaid hanging up on their office wall.

This is the bit I find hard to understand, I've seen the IT infrastructure of quite a few government department and know that the capability to do this is certainly there. Provided the political will to get it all done is there.

There's sure as **** been enough money spent on IT consulting in the past 10 years (ish) that this should be childs play if they put their minds wills to it if they asked the IT consultants to make it work.
