If you "expose yourself" within 200m or a school/college your automatically on the sex offenders list in some states in the USA. Your also not allowed to state why your on it when you tell you do your rounds informing your neighbours you are on the list!

A m8 had a sneaky slash after a night out down a laneway in a college town in AZ, was caught, charged and informed of the sex offenders list punishment. As he was Irish he managed to play the dumb card and get away with it.

Common sense does not prevail in the eyes of the law in the USA all too often

I think many Americans are irrational towards the sex offender registry. They assume that all of the people listed there are pedophiles or rapists who are out there just waiting to strike. Some are. Many probably are.

But, I got crucified, once, for arguing that not all registrants are sex-crazed animals looking for their next victim. I remember a story involving a kid mooning his teacher and he had to register for the rest of his life as a sex offender. It's over reaching.

Actually I don't suppose we can be too high and mighty. If two 16 year olds in Ireland have sex they are both considered to be rapists. Oh, and there's plans to create a similar sex offender list here too.

100% totally agree with this. It's way way out of hand.

But the result is now when I hear a "sex offender" lives two blocks away, my response is "meh." It could mean anything.

As a parent, I can tell you it's made me insanely vigilant with my own boy about making is sure his pants are pulled up all the time and private areas etc.

I would be curious what the perimeters would be with your list. Here, people who register cannot live within a specific mileage of a school, playground, or other public space where children frequent. These are also publicly viewed list. I can go online and type in my address and find the address of every offender near my house. I'll learn their name, race, height, weight, and crime.

A movie is not considered pornography unless there is a visible erect penis. That is the line that is drawn.

It's not that the law is an ass, it's that people who don't inform themselves about the law are asses, and that's why they act like the law doesn't apply to them.

Being put on the sex offenders register isn't what caused the teenager to take his own life, he made that decision of his own accord, just like he made the decision to streak when he was aware that he could be punished for it. He chose to forego the consequences of his actions. You can't blame the law for that.

It won't be anything as comprehensive as that

What is proposed is say you have a concern over your kids swimming coach, bus driver, neighbour, whoever then you can approach your local Garda station and a seargent will take your request. You can't deal with just any Garda here, there will be staff assigned to this role. 3 per division is the number I think I heard.

In time you'll get a report stating if that person has any convictions. Though to get such a job they would have been checked already but you can still check.

That's it, there is no website or public directory. If you want to check out people then you need to ask for that information and lodge a request.
