I know some will disagree but I think the anti smoking thing is going way over the top at home. I don't smoke myself. Where I am you can still smoke indoors and it's fine. I have no issue with it at all.

It's your lungs, no one elses. I'm getting tired of the nannyism of the state sticking their nose in to what we should and shouldn't eat or drink or inhale etc. Leave it out. Or be sensible at the very least.

Attacking and ostracising a group of people because you're stuck up your own arse and think you have a right to nanny everyone you don't particularly like their habits is not a nice thing to do. How is smoking outdoors doing anyone any harm whatsoever other than the consenting individual themselves? Ridiculous.

I'd imagine it'll be an idealistic thing that won't be enforced, go to Tallaght or Blanch hospitals and observe the 'smoke free' campuses.

Except it's not the state sticking their nose in. It's the UCD students voting themselves on what rule to implement in their own campus.

I don't mind people smoking outdoors myself, but it's their campus, so fair enough.

this isn't a thread about pollen, etc, is it? I get very bad reactions from cigarette smoke, the OP seems to suggest that non smokers 'just don't like' smoking, the context here is obvious.

Tiny minority end up in that situation. I am not a smoker but I can see that smokers are being demeaned and isolated.

It's a large group of the population. And most smokers to my knowledge don't smoke by choice. It's an addiction.

Your not allowed logic here as apparently the whole cost of healthcare is caused via smoking. So smokers don't pay for themselves they cost the state money they will tell you.

Contrary to that newspaper report, students haven't made the decision.

The students "preferendum" was technically just asking for students' opinions, since it would likely be impossible to implement a ban without students' co-operation.

The ultimate decision is that of the UCD Governing Authority/ University Management, and they have every right, as per their intention, to implement the ban on the campus, just like any other business can regulate what happens on its grounds, within the law.

they're pretty good as they keep the hands occupied, which is a major obstacle to giving up.

I know a few people who've tried them, all went back to the fags.

In theory they're great, but in practice it's too easy to fall back into the old ways.

Although I'm sure they're successful for others.

Most people I know that bought them are still using them instead of cigarettes. My sister buys different flavours online. There's some crazy ones there. Her one at the moment tastes like a chocolate milkshake. She says you can buy Refresher bar flavours too. :eek:

Both smokers and non-smokers alike pay taxes, and end up contributing towards costs like that. But you must see there's a cause for resentment there from non-smokers.

I have an uncle who got cancer in his throat and lungs, went to hospital, got it removed, got treatment, recovered, and continued to smoke like a chimney. I'd love to end up being an organ donor after death, as I'm aware there's a long waiting list for some people (including sick children) who desperately need a transplant to live. The thought that my organs could go to someone who smokes every day, who will recover, smoke, and end up taking up yet another spot on the waiting list, is really terribly sad to me.

Its banned on the grounds of the hospital in Galway, but not the university, yet. I rarely have smoke blown in my face when walking around campus so it doesn't really bother me. But I don't have asthma or any alergies or anything so maybe I don't notice it as much as others.

the government will never ban them, it brings in too much cash. I reckon smoking will die out on a its own eventually, its not cool like it used to be.

So one persons life is worth more than someone else's ? i thought we were all entitled to medical care when needed. I do agree that he prob should have stopped smoking tbh but it's not Illegal just bad form.

I also find it hilarious getting the UAE thing thrown at me when I want to bring something like this up at home. The UAE is more liberal and safer than Ireland is in many different ways. I know some won't believe that but I live here and I can say that is 100% the case. It's a grand place. So many misconceptions. Some places you can't smoke but most you can. In pubs and nightclubs (yes they have pubs and nightclubs but not many) you can smoke.

But I don't see why it should matter where another poster is bringing up what is effectively a civil liberties issue at home. Throwing that out is very weak in my opinion anyway.

As a smoker I'm pretty sick of them trying to ban it everywhere. Feel like I'm back at school again having to sneak a quick fag down the hockey pitch. We're slowly becoming a very anti-social country.
