Yes and some of those early vvti engines are know to burn lots of oil

They like a drop of oil alright but not lots. The worst of the oil burners were repaired by Toyota. As long as the oil is changed on time oil burning should not be an issue.

Would this one be a better choice? Asking €350 less and considerably lower mileage. A months tax left on it too so it would seem you are good to hop into it and drive away. Not quite as long a test on it but still it has almost 9 months test. Rims aren't to my liking but if that's the biggest misdemeanor.

I'd agree with you on the liftback and go as far as to say they are an awful looking yoke. Still though saloon or liftback they are fantastic cars for what they are. Keep an eye on the oil levels on the early vvti engines though...

That's actually tempting as a runabout. I'm considering getting a runaround more economical second car as I have started doing a lot more miles than initially anticipated.

That punto must be the earliest incarnation of the "small diesel engine in city car" craze that went wild from 2008 on. Similar cars like fiesta/polo/corsa etc were all 1.7-1.9 in the diesel variant back then.
